  • A Little About Astronomy Astrology

We live on Earth. During daytime we see the Sun gradually crossing over the sky; and at nighttime, the Moon does so. The Earth is a 'Planet' of the Solar system - whereas Astronomically Sun is a 'Star' and Moon is a 'Satellite'. But in Astrological parlance, the two Luminaries (Sun and Moon), five other planets (Mars to Saturn), the two Lunar Nodes (Rahu Ketu) have been classified together as 'Grahas' - which literally means the fast-moving large massive bodies hovering in space. As the nearest term available in the widely known language English is 'Planet', we habitually term the 'Grahas' as "Planets" - without making any distinction whether each of these is a star, planet, satellite, or node. Thus, it must not be construed that our ancient seers were not aware of the distinction; they were even very well aware of the fact that the SUN also moves round the center of the Galaxy (Milky Way), and it takes about 25, 777 years to make a complete round. Nothing in space can ever remain in a static condition.

There are innumerable galaxies in the Universe, and our Milky Way galaxy is just one of these. The center of our 'Milky Way' Galaxy is situated in sign Sagittarius at about 242* Longitude and about 6* South Latitude - at a distance of about 26, 000 Light years away (from Earth/ Sun). The Sun's orbit lies at about half the distance from the center of the Galaxy to its edge. The position of the center of the Galaxy falls in 'Moola' Nakshatra - from where the new stars are said to evolve, and start moving apart. As the galaxy is not situated on the same plane where we are stationed, we can observe it from one side only (from above); for this reason, what happens in the other part will always remain unexplored. … Thermodynamics postulates that the 'entropy' (or the measure of disorder) has been increasing; and Astronomy claims that the Universe is expanding. Well, is it? Although it appears to be so, most possibly it is not; what is actually happening might be just the opposite.

Let us imagine that we take a big spherical balloon and hold two diametrically opposite points on its periphery, then compress the two points towards inside vertically, and bring the two points together coinciding with the center of the balloon; thus we get two equal conjoined haves - of 3-dimensional figure of annular shape, having no internal diameter. When seen from one side, if any particle evolves from its center and moves apart up to the periphery of one half, then (and till then) it will appear to be moving apart, but on further continuation of its sojourn, instead of diverging, it will start converging; upon reaching the other side, it will proceed towards the same center. Although a bit overly imaginative concept, yet it appears to be a fairly reasonable model. … In our ancient sacred scriptures also, indications have been given along similar lines - after expanding for some time, there comes a time-period of equal duration for contraction for 'regeneration' (which is termed as 'pralaya' or dissolution - which is neither disintegration nor dissipation). … Thus it appears entirely possible that the Universe is not at all expanding, rather it is in a steady state; the things contained in it will appear to move apart for some time, and - although these will still continue their motion apparently in the 'same' direction, yet after some duration of time - these will in fact turn back, and proceed towards the very same point from where these had begun their sojourn.

The physical forms of materials are destructible or perishable, but the core 'elements' are not; the 'elements' undergo transformation only, and in the long run always return back to the same source from where these had originally evolved.

However, persons engaged in the pursuit of Astrology should not and must not be bogged down by the mirage of too much of Astronomy - which is a materialistic 'science' (while Astrology being termed as a half-science and half-art - which conforms to the precise definition of an 'applied science' or technology). The observable or roughly/ vaguely 'measurable' properties like distance, mass, gravitation, luminosity, electro-magnetic radiation, x-ray emanation, etc either in isolation or in any simple- or complex- combination (with various other reasonable or doubtful factors) do in no way help us to estimate the nature of effects of the planets; the significations of the planets are essentially 'esoteric' .

Regarding the newly discovered trans-Saturnine planets (Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto), it deserves to be mentioned here that not much of dependable information is available about the effects of these planets so far. It may be noted that it is neither essential nor even necessary to take these planets into account - as their so-called effects can be ascertained by considering the main 7 planets and 2 nodes. But as many practicing Astrologers habitually note the positions of these trans-Saturnine planets, we have kept the provisions for determining the positions of these planets (including the position of the recently discovered planet Chiron).

The positions of the Lunar nodes (Rahu and Ketu) are measured in two different ways: one is as per their 'mean' motion - which is uniform and always retrograde - while the other is their 'true' motion - which is not uniform, and can be retrograde, static, or even direct. At times, the positions as per these two systems may and can differ from each other by up to about 1*45' . Although we have kept the provision for finding the positions as per either of the methods as chosen, we wish to mention here that for astrological predictive purposes, the 'mean' positions offer more reliable results - while for astronomical purposes like finding the exact moments and durations of eclipses, etc the 'true' positions offer accurate results.

Another important thing is to note that as we are stationed on the Earth, we are concerned with the 'apparent' motions of the planets. At times when the non-luminous planets (Mars to Saturn) arrive at certain angular distances from the Sun, they become stationary for a brief duration, and then they appear to move in opposite direction that continues for a number of days; this is called "retrogression" of planets. Thereafter, they become stationary again, and after that resume their direct motion; the process goes on in a cyclic order. Not only the direction of motion, but also the rate of motion of the individual planets at a particular moment of time is important, and deserve to be noted - since these are also indicative of certain characteristic effects.

Time is the property of motion, and motion is the quality of the hovering bodies having some mass (however immense or insignificant those might be). Mass is the condensed form of Energy resulting from curvature of Space - while Energy is the released form of Mass resulting from contraction of curvature of Space. When a mass is moving through a region of the space, the two are influencing each other; the mass is trying to bend a part of the space around it by trying to create a curvature (but is only capable of causing ripples - which gradually subside), and in turn the space is trying to resist it by inducing great stress on the mass (which has to endure the resultant strain). Thus, owing to such mass-space interaction, some sort of 'effect' is generated. At the time of birth or formation, a person, creature, or a thing had been under a set of such effects - which has ever since then being slowly, steadily, and continuously being modified by the ever-changing transitory effects leading to gradual transformation that will go on till its existence reaches the respective ending moment.

According to our traditional belief, life is not considered to be an isolated existence between birth and the 'great escape' ; rather, it is considered to be a continuation between the past existence of the previous birth and the future existence of the next birth. The non-escapable law of 'Karma' holds us all in its firm grip. The horoscope is thus considered to be a 'balance-sheet' of the fruits of meritorious and otherwise deeds one has committed in his/ her past existence, and cumulative effect of those will determine what lies in the store of the native in the present existence. Then again, he/ she will continue doing some more deeds in the present existence - good, or bad, or probably both; thereby his/ her prospect of enjoying the 'results' would most possibly become further complicated! This is why it is being said that through such sacred subjects (like Astrology), we have been trying to comprehend the incomprehensible!

Now let us concentrate on the more practical aspects. The Moon moves round the Earth (and its orbit is nearly circular), and the planets from Mars to Saturn are eternally in motion in elliptical orbits around the Sun. From the Earth (our station of observation), they appear to move around the Earth. The Lunar Nodes (Rahu and Ketu) are not visible - as they have no mass; nevertheless, as they are intersection points of the apparent orbits of the Sun (of the Earth actually) and the Moon, they are capable of exerting tremendous influences.

The cycle of the 30 phases of the Moon (= 29. 5306 days) might have given rise to the concept of 'month' , and annual phenomena of re-appearance of the seasons (= 365. 25 days) might have given rise to the concept of the 'year' . As the Lunar year falls a bit short of 360 days (29. 5306 * 12 = about 354) and the Annual Solar return is a bit more than 360 days, probably the mean figure of 360 was taken from Luni-Solar Calendar, to be the measure of the zodiac; and its one-twelfth division (360 / 12 = 30) was taken to be the measure of a sign. Lunar movement through the fixed constellations (= 27. 3217 days) gave rise to the concept of 28 Nakshatras (including tiny tot Abhijit) - which was later being taken as 27 Nakshatras for the sake of ease and convenience of calculating, and the measure of a nakshatra was fixed as 13*20' (= 360* / 27) .

One thing appears quite queer that the 12 equal segments of the zodiac have been termed as 'Rashis' in Sanskrit; in English, these are called signs. It does not really matter what the term is used in a developing language like English - since they use the names for the purpose of identification only. But it is entirely different when it comes to Sanskrit. The name 'Rama' consists of two letters 'R(a)' and 'M(a)' with a monosyllable 'a' placed in-between. The brevity of Sanskrit is such that not only the letters used but also their relative placements are full of significations. The term 'Rashi' as such cannot really mean 'a segment of zodiac' ; what it actually means is that it is an assimilation of various constituent parts - which are reasonably termed as 'Amshas' (that means 'divisions' ). … As such, it will be well understandable to the interested readers that the 'Rashis' are in fact not mere astronomical segments only; a Rashi contains as many divisions of the corresponding divisional charts - like 2 Horas, 3 Drekkanas, 9 Navamshas, 10 Dashamamshas, etc. The divisional charts are in fact 'symbolic' ones, and they are of limited significations and usefulness; what is more important is the corresponding divisional positions of planets when it is in a 'Rashi' - regardless of whether the positions have reference to natal-, progressed-, or transit- charts.

  • BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO " I-CHING " :

I-Ching is an age-old Chinese method of divination. It is a fascinating subject, considered to be sacred. Therefore, it deserves to be treated with reverence, and I-Ching consultation is not meant for frivolous purposes. Down the ages, it has attracted the attention of innumerable persons of various countries, and have gained worldwide popularity. Briefly speaking, the 64 hexagrams corresponding to 64 different real life situations constitute the subject of I-Ching.

ABOUT THE 8 DIFFERENT 'TRIGRAMS' :

Actually, every individual diagram consists of two "trigrams" - one upper and the other lower. The upper trigram is relatively more important than the lower. As there are 8 different types of trigrams, 8 X 8 = 64 different types of hexagrams are possible in total. The Names of the 8 different trigrams are as under :

    (1) Ch'ien., (2) Chen., (3) K'an., (4) Ken., (5)K'un., (6) S'un., (7) Li., and (8) Tui.

These 8 trigams were conceived as images of all real life situations. The name, meaning, attribute, image and family relationship of these 8 different trigrams are given below :

ABOUT THE "HEXAGRAMS" 8 'SPECIAL' HEXAGRAMS :

As mentioned earlier, there are 64 different hexagrams, consisting of any of the 8 different trigrams as the upper, and any of the same 8 different trigrams as lower. 8 X 8 yields a total of 64 . Since every individual hexagram in fact consists of two different trigrams of the same type or two different types, rather than being individual entities - they are actually dependent on their constituent trigrams. Out of these two constituent trigrams, the upper one is relatively more important. ... In 8 different cases, the two constituent trigrams become the very same; in such cases, the indicated significations will obviously become confirmatory.

    A General Introduction to 'Tarot'

"- Man is a portal through which one enters from the outer world of the gods and souls to the inner world - from the greater world to the smaller world. Small and insignificant is man; one leaves him soon behind, and thus one enters once more into infinite space, into the microcosm, and into the inner eternity."
    - C. G. Jung.

TAROT (actually pronounced as "Tar-ro") is a highly popular system of divination enthusiastically practiced in various parts of the world nowadays. Although to the uninitiated common people it may appear to be merely an amusing fun-game involving a deck of (22 + 56 =) 78 cards* of peculiar type, it is not merely an uncertain or unreliable method of fortune-telling for entertaining frivolous people, and answering their dud or stale queries; this ancient and novel system has been found to be really very dependable. For several centuries, it had been popular throughout the world, and people's curiosity and interest in this subject has ever since been increasing by leaps and bounds. To the magical wonderland of TAROT , you are most cordially welcome.

[* N.B.: TAROT of the Spirit contains *1 additional card - which is not used traditionally. It is used only in case of The Spiritual Ten Gates of Tarot method (of 10 Cards' spread) . This special card is unlabeled, and it bears a typical design of inverted triangular shape. This last card is termed as the "Mystery Card" , and is considered as the most powerful master of the deck of (78 + 1 =) *79 TAROT cards . ]

You must not be surprised to listen even from some highly learned persons that they really believe in the saying: "your future is in your cards" . While for learning any other method of divination, even highly intelligent persons may require several years' or even a number of decades' patient study and experience, an average person can learn how to interpret the Tarot spreads within a few months - even if it may not be possible to master the art within a few weeks. You will also surely be very keenly interested to learn the unique method of divination through the grace of TAROT .

Although not certainly known, TAROT is believed to be of very ancient origin. J.F. Vaillent (in Les Romes, histoire vraie des vraise Bohemiens, 1857) stated that the great divinity As-Taroth is of Indo-Tarter origin - Tan-tara or the TAROT is the symbolic expression of the Zodiac . But many learned scholars offer widely varying opinions as regards its real origin - although the origin of TAROT is often attributed to the ancient Gnostics, various countries, religions, and sects were connected with it. Probably it grew and developed through a few centuries; and, possibly its two main sections were developed during two different time-periods; the 22 mystical "Major Enumeration Keys" have Kabala connection (which is a mystical Jewish tradition), while the 56 'Minor Arcanas' might be a later incorporation by around the 14th century by the Italians (it is not a just coincidence that an Italian game of cards is known as Tarocchi ). By around the 15th century, it became very popular in France. By around the 19th century, it attracted the attention of many noted occultists worldwide, and in the last quarter of the 20th century it became very popular around the world. In the Western countries, the subject of "Numerology" was later developed as a mere offshoot of Tarot.

The divine subject of TAROT was probably conceived and developed by ancient Egyptian priests; they had initially recorded their teachings in a symbolic manner for preserving their secrets - which could be understandable only to the real adepts or initiates. The Egyptian word 'tar' means a path, while 'ros' means royal; both combined means the "royal path of life" . Another word of the same language 'taru' means: "to consult for the required answer" . As during that particular time-period their kingdom was in danger of being ravaged by foreign invaders, many people had to migrate to different countries; besides their lives, they also took their faith, culture, learning, etc with them - with which they had considerably influenced various people of their host countries.

It is believed that TAROT is the golden "Key" , which opens the main entrance door of the house of mystic knowledge. It enables the enquirer to decipher the divine intentions in a very unique manner. Its penetrating searchlight is capable of fathoming the immense depth and foreseeing everything what are there beyond the far distant horizon - the people, places, things, events, happenings, etc. It does neither utter a single word nor does it listen - but it perfectly understands, and reveals the true 'picture'. It reads your mind, understands your chief concerns, and offers amazingly accurate replies to all your queries - whether these are religious or secular, mundane or spiritual, complex or simple, it simply does not matter. It is sure to give you true replies, revealing in a subtle manner - which will be perfectly understandable to you in any situation; it will guide you as your most trusted friend; and like an angel, will guard you as a protective guardian.

The process of divination through TAROT chiefly consists of laying of cards in various patterns, which are termed as "spreads"; various kinds of "spreads" consisting of the same or different number of Cards are in use. For consultations of general nature concerning day-to-day affairs, the ancient Celtic Cross method consisting of 10 different cards is relatively more popular; it offers a very comprehensive details about the enquirer's present condition and circumstances - together with information about the past and the expected outcome in immediate- and near- future. There are two other methods wherein 10 different cards are used in the spread. These are: (1) The Modern Maga Diamond method , and (2) The Spiritual Ten Gates of Tarot method (In case of the latter, the additional Mystery Card (Card # 79) is also used).

TAROT has close links with Astrology; each of the 22 Major Enumeration Key Cards bears the symbol of a zodiacal sign and/ or planet , which adds another dimension to the interpretations. Probably evolved on a relatively later period, the Horoscope method consisting of 12 different cards is also very popular with the persons who have good knowledge and information in the subject of Astrology - as the 12 cards of this particular "spread" correspond to 12 different 'houses' of the horoscope, whose corresponding significations can be interpreted with ease and convenience.

A method consisting of 8 different cards is very popularly used for replying to the queries concerned with the affairs of the heart. It is more popularly used in case of 'female' enquirers - as this spread covers the more frequently asked questions, which are of chief concern to the general 'female' enquirers. ... Another method consists of 7 different cards . This offers a reliable picture of the possible outcome expected to happen in immediate future; this method can be depended upon when a person becomes quite upset owing to some recent development, and is really very serious to know about the possible outcome in immediate future - which greatly concerns him/ her.

There are 2 distinctly different methods - which consists of 5 different cards only. In these methods, only the 22 Major Enumeration Key cards are employed - while the 56 Minor 'Arcana' cards are removed from the pack before shuffling. This method works very well for minor enquiries of relatively less importance. This spread also offers brief, precise, and honest reply; but the interpretations obtained in this method are like interpreting dreams - as these are expressed in a rather symbolic language; Although these appear as to be the 'hints' to others, these are nevertheless perfectly understandable to the enquirer as he/ she knows best about the person, place, thing, etc he/ she is really concerned about.

For more general cases of relatively less importance, the use of 5 different Casual Methods - each consisting of 3 different Cards - is also quite commonly found. Depending on the nature of query, the corresponding three cards (first, second, and the third) denote:

    (i) About the Time-periods: Past, Present, and Future.

(ii) About the Time of the day: Morning to Noon, Noon to Evening, Evening and Night.

(iii) About the areas of life: Monetary dealings, Profession/ Business, and Love/ Marriage.

(iv) About the concerned persons: Relatives and very close Friends, Family members staying together, and Acquaintances and Associates.

    (v) About the objectives: Significator for the issue, Action taken or to be taken, Resolution or Outcome.

We have kept the provision for utilizing any of these various methods according to the user's personal choice, inclination, or requirement.

The 56 Minor 'Arcana' cards are classified into 4 categories: Swords, Cups, Pentacles, and Wands . There are 14 cards in each category: from Ace to 10 are called numbered or 'pip' cards, and remaining 4 'face' cards (Valet, Knight, Queen, and King - which are also called court cards. The Minor 'Arcana' Cards are indicative of the "situations" - which lead to events or happenings. In general, the Swords cards have affinity with the 'fire' element; these indicate the person's mental condition and intellectual level , the Cups cards have affinity with the 'water' element; these relate to the person's satisfaction in emotional life , the Pentacles cards have affinity with the 'earth' element; these correspond to the person's physical state and material status , while the Wands cards have affinity with the 'air' element; these reveal the person's capacities and potentials, and his/ her level of attainment in professional career . Thus, it can easily be seen that TAROT covers almost all possible 'aspects' of real life.

The distinct difference between the 22 Major Enumeration Key Cards and the 56 Minor 'Arcana' cards lies in the fact that whereas the former is by nature basically 'spiritual' , and hence indicates the eternal quest of the soul for further development, the latter is functionally 'mundane' - it describes the person's social position and his/ her circumstantial conditions. Nevertheless, these two classes of cards are conjugate complements of each other.

It is very interesting to know the description and meaning of the various classes and sub-classes of the TAROT cards.

    (i) The Main Class : The most important class consists of 22 Major Enumeration Key Cards . These are often termed as the 'Trumps suit' also, which is the heart of Tarot. The meanings of each of these illustrations are mystical and complex as well; and their allegorical representations are of various states of being, which in other words signifies the varying stages of spiritual development.

(ii) The Minor Class : It consists of 56 Minor 'Arcana' Cards . These in turn are classified into 4 sub-classes of 14 Cards each . Each of the sub-class is further divided into 2 sub-sub classes : the former sub-sub consists of 10 'pip' cards and the latter consists of 4 'face' cards:

    (a) The Sub-Class I : This class is termed as the Swords . It has affinity with the 'fire' element . It indicates the nobility and the influential people - who possess temporal powers, and have the tendency to wage war or design intrigues for gaining control over others. If such a card is found in the reading, then it indicates the presence of-, and will offer descriptions of-, the enemies - be it an individual or a group - who may wish to cause harm or try to exploit/ control the individuals for their own benefit. In general, the Swords cards are indicative of the person's mental condition and intellectual level.

    (b) Sub-Class II : This class is termed as the Cups . It has affinity with the 'water' element. It indicates the clergy or the priest class - who are concerned about the welfare of their fellow men; they do not hesitate to do whatever they can for alleviating the sufferings of others. If such a card is found in the reading, then it indicates that there are individuals or groups who are quite favorably disposed to-, and will actively assist-, the individual - without any expectation for fulfilling their own interests. In general, the Cups cards are related to the person's satisfaction in emotional life.

    (c) Sub-Class III : This class is termed as the Pentacles . It has affinity with the 'earth' element. It indicates the merchant class and the business people - who possess a lot of money, and are fully aware of the power of money. If such a card is found in the reading, then it indicates that such people might utilize their money power and manipulative skills. Their influence might be in the individual person's favor or just the opposite - depending on whether the card is upright (positive) or upside down (negative). In general, the Pentacles cards correspond to the person's physical state and material status.

    (d) Sub-Class IV : This class is termed as the Wands . It has affinity with the 'air' element. It indicates the people belonging to the working class. Although in general they do not remain in favorable circumstances, they possess physical strength - and as a united group they are capable of becoming a formidable force to reckon with. If such a card is found in the reading, then it indicates the ability or potential to achieve success even on the face of insurmountable odds; it may even be achieved by switching over from one place to another. In general, the Wands cards reveal the person's capacities and potentials, and his/ her level of attainment in professional career.

The Fateful Cards (among the 22 Major Enumeration Key Cards): Among the Major Enumeration Key Cards, only three cards (# 13, # 16, & 22) are considered to be fateful. Unfavorable results are expected if any such number is repeated thrice (or more) in 12 Cards' or 10 Cards' shuffle. Unfavorable results are also expected all these three numbers appear in the same spread. The problems would be more intensified if all of these three (or more) fateful Cards appear in upside down (or negative) posture.

It is interesting to note that these 56 Minor 'Arcana' cards have correspondence with the modern deck of playing cards, which consists of 52 (+ 1) cards (the 4 Knights are eliminated, and extra 1 added). Among the numbered or 'pip' cards, the Swords became the Spades, the Cups became the Hearts, the Pentacles became the Diamonds, the Wands became the Clubs. Among the 'face' or court cards, the Valet became the Jack, the Knight was eliminated (probably owing to change of socio-political conditions), but the Queen and the King remained just the very same. The 22 Major Enumeration Key cards are considered sacred; these correspond to the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Out of these 22 cards, the card no. 22 - which is sometimes alternately denoted as 0 (zero) instead - denoted by "The Fool"; later it became transformed into 'the Joker' as the extra card in the modern deck of playing cards. Normally, the Joker is not used at all; but when necessity arises, it can take the place of any other card! In TAROT , it has been greatly stressed by the saying: 'No one should ever underestimate the wisdom of "The Fool"! It warns you about the great danger that is lying just ahead; one more wrong step, and ...!'

It must be clearly understood that essentially the TAROT interpretations have to be symbolic or metaphorical to a great extent. An interpreter can in practice come to certain expressions for some sensible events/ happenings (but not its precisely particular form); but the 'reading' would appear to be meaningful to the actual enquirer - as he/ she is fully aware of the situation (and the possible repercussions) that he/ she is currently in or facing. It will be obvious from the fact that there are 78 Cards in total - each of which can appear in upright or upside-down positions; thus, there can be 78 * 2 = 156 possible interpretations for each card. Now, just imagine the possible variations in every shuffle:

    (1). At the minimum, there could be 3 Cards' spread. So, there could be = (156) raised to the power 3 = 156 * 156 * 156 = 37, 96, 416 variations.

    (2). At the maximum, there could be 12 Cards' So, there could be = (156) raised to the power 12 = 156 * 156 * 156 * 156 * 156 * 156 * 156 * 156 * 156 * 156 * 156 * 156 = 207, 728, 070, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000 types of possible variations. The staggering astronomical figure is unfathomable beyond doubt!

May the divine grace of TAROT lead us through the right path, guide us in our journey through life, illumine our souls, and surround our lives with peace and harmony, prosperity and happiness.

In 8 different cases, the two constituent trigrams become the very same; in such cases, the indicated significations will obviously become confirmatory. It should further be noted that the individual hexagrams also have also been attributed with distinctive names. But in case of these 8 hexagrams, the respective name remains the very same as their constituent/s for obvious reasons. The Names of these 8 hexagrams, the names of their constituent trigrams, together with their respective serial numbers in the typical scheme of 64 different hexagrams are given below :

    1. Ch'ien : Ch'ien-Ch'ien (Serial # 1).

  • The Study of Bio-Rhythms

It is our common knowledge that often for no apparent reason, sometimes one remains in good form, while at some other times in just the obverse condition; sometimes the mind remains clear, sometimes it becomes beclouded or confused; sometimes one possesses perfect self-control, while at some other times he/ she tends to lose it almost completely. These peculiarities had long since been known to all, but the reasons behind this sort of fluctuations had remained unknown since long. With the discovery of the Bio-Rhythmic cycles, explanations for such changes became very evident. By basing upon these cycles, offering certain characteristic predictions for the future became entirely possible.

The Bio-Rhythmic cycles were discovered jointly by Swoboda (an Austrian psychologist) and Fliess (a German physician). Much of research have been carried out basing upon their theories, and in some developed countries (like U.S.A., Germany, etc), already the application-stage has been reached. The basic concept of the theory is that the human beings experience various regular and periodic fluctuations in various planes - like waves, which are alternately increasing and decreasing. Beginning from the very date of (including time of) birth, the cycles of progression of three different planes follow a definite pattern - which is applicable to one and all :

    (1) For Physical Strength and Endurance : The Cycle is of 23 days.,

    (2) For Emotional Responses and Feelings : The Cycle is of 28 days., and

    (3) For Intellectual Activities : The Cycle is of 33 days.

In every individual cycle, the first half is the positive phase, while the remaining half is the recovery phase. In graphical representations, the positive phase is shown above the axial line, while the negative phase is shown below the same.

Again, the first half of the positive phase (that is, the first quarter of the cycle) is aptly termed as the rising quarter and the next part is termed as the setting quarter; in similar manner, the first half of the negative phase is termed as the sinking quarter and the next part is termed as the bumping quarter.

In every cycle, the periods are really very dull, when change occurs from one phase to another; this occurs twice in every cycle. The dates on which such changes occur are considered sensitive dates for the corresponding significations. If on the same date such changes are found to occur in case of any two cycles, then the intensity of risk will obviously increase.

If on the same date such changes are found to occur in case of all the three cycles, then the intensity of risk will be alarmingly high; and if such changes are found to occur on three consecutive days or within a narrow span of two days, then also the effect is found to be similar.

Although it does not happen each and every time definitely, occurrences like serious suffering owing to deterioration of health, facing an accidental mishap, becoming a victim of untoward happening, etc are often found to fall on such high-risk dates. As such, Bio-Rhythm can be advantageously used for identifying the high-risk days beforehand - so that one can be in a position to remain more careful, cautious, and alert.

    (1) For Physical Strength and Endurance : 11.5 days.,

    (2) For Emotional Responses and Feelings : 14 days., and

    (3) For Intellectual Activities : 16.5 days.

It is obvious that the first (Physical) and the second (Emotional) cycles will coincide after every 161 days); the second (Emotional) and the third (Intellectual) cycles will coincide after every 231 days; the first (Physical) and the third (Intellectual) cycles will coincide after every 189.75 days.

After every 2,656.5 days - which comes to about 7 years 3 months 10 days - all the three cycles (Physical, Emotional, and Intellectual) will coincide. As such, the age-periods of about 7.25 or it's multiples (like 14.5, 21.75, 29, 36.25, 43.5, 50.75, 58, etc) can be construed as critical age-periods . Illustrious occultist Cheiro had also expressed similar views as he had mentioned that 7 and it's multiples (7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, etc) are to be considered as critical or transitional age-periods.

At a particular period of time, if a person's all the three Bio-Rhythmic cycles are in the positive phase, then the person remains in high spirit; but if all the three Bio-Rhythmic cycles are in the negative phase, then the person is likely to remain in a quite depressed state. And during the times when these cycles reach their juncture points of their respective phase-change, the person remains in a quite sensitive and vulnerable stage.

On a particular day (and at a particular point of time), If two persons' Bio-Rhythmic cycles fall in the same phase (regardless of whether it is positive or negative), then they will be in perfect harmony, and will be quick to be sympathetic to- and agree with- each other; but when the same two persons' Bio-Rhythmic cycles will fall in the opposite phases (one in positive and the other in negative), then harmony might be thoroughly lacking, they may not be sympathetic to each other, may develop some difference of opinions, and can even have some pretty serious disagreement between themselves.

    (3) Jupiter or Mercury or Venus should remain in the 9th house from the Lagna.

SELECTING A SUITABLE NAME FOR THE CHILD :

Choosing the first letter of the first name :

This can be done in two ways :

    (1) As per the Nakshatra-charan of the Moon which will be suggested on clicking option.

    Or :

    (2) As per the Ascendant-sign which will also be suggested on clicking option.

The former method is more popular in the North Indian states whereas the latter method is more popular in the East Indian states. In some cases, however, it is the usual practice to choose two different names; the name chosen has the first letter as per either of the above two methods is mentioned in the horoscope only while an entirely different name is selected for general use whose first letter is different from either of these two methods

Choosing the first letter as per the Ascendant sign :

If the Ascendant Sign is Leo (Sign no. = 5), then the first letter will be any of the 12 vowels used in our zonal languages : A, Aa, I, Ee, U, Oo, Ri, Li, E, Ai, O, Ow.

If the Ascendant Sign is Aries (Sign no. = 1), then the first letter will be the first or the third letter of Ka-varga -- that is, Ka or Ga.

If the Ascendant Sign is Scorpio (Sign no. = 8), then the first letter will be the second or the fourth letter of Ka-varga -- that is, Kha or Gha.

If the Ascendant Sign is Libra (Sign no. = 7), then the first letter will be the first or the third letter of Cha-varga -- that is, Cha or Ja.

If the Ascendant Sign is Taurus (Sign no. = 2), then the first letter will be the second or the fourth letter of Cha-varga -- that is, Chha or Jha.

If the Ascendant Sign is Gemini (Sign no. = 3), then the first letter will be the first or the third or the fifth letter of Ta-varga (Hard) -- that is, Ta or Da.

If the Ascendant Sign is Virgo (Sign no. = 6), then the first letter will be the second or the fourth letter of Ta-varga (Hard) -- that is, Tha or Dha.

If the Ascendant Sign is Sagittarius (Sign no. = 3), then the first letter will be the first or the third or the fifth letter of Ta-varga (Light) -- that is, Ta or Da.

If the Ascendant Sign is Pisces (Sign no. = 12), then the first letter will be the second or the fourth letter of Ta-varga (Light) -- that is, Tha or Dha.

If the Ascendant Sign is Aquarius (Sign no. = 11), then the first letter will be the first or the third or the fifth letter of Pa-varga -- that is, Pa or Ba or Ma.

If the Ascendant Sign is Capricorn (Sign no. = 10), then the first letter will be the second or the fourth letter of Pa-varga -- that is, Pha or Bha.

If the Ascendant Sign is Cancer (Sign no. = 4), then the first letter will be any of the remaining letters -- that is, Ya or Ra or La or Va or Sha (first) or Sha (second) or Sa or Ha.

Choosing the number of letters in the first name :

Generally, in case of boys, the total number of letters in a name, which is preferred is normally an even figure (like Rama or Krishna which have two main letters when written in Indian languages). It is normally believed that boys having odd number of letters in their first name become more aggressive while those having even number of letters become more fortunate.

The reverse holds good in case of the girls. Generally, the total number of letters in a name, which is preferred is normally an odd figure (like Sunita or Parvati which have three letters). It is normally believed that girls having even number of letters in their first name become more aggressive while those having odd number of letters become more fortunate.

Choosing the number of words in the full name :

Generally, in case of boys, the total number of letters in a name, which is preferred is normally an odd figure (normally, three words constitute the full name). It is believed that boys having odd number of words in their full name become more aggressive while those having even number of words become more fortunate.

The reverse holds good in case of the girls. Generally, in case of girls, the total number of letters in a name, which is preferred is normally an even figure (normally, two words constitute the full name). It is believed that girls having even number of words in their full name become more aggressive while those having odd number of words become more fortunate.

Numerological considerations for choosing the name :

A person is born on any date as per English Calendar. So, the figure can be any one from 1 to 31. If the figure is a single number (from 1 to 9), then the date number is the figure itself. Else, the two digits are numerically added together till they form a single digit, which then becomes the date number. Thus, if the date is 31, then the date number is (3 + 1) = 4 and if the date is 29, then (2 + 9) yields 11 first which on addition in similar manner yields (1 + 1) = 2 which becomes the date number.

For different letters of English language, different numerological values have been assigned. The figures are numerically added till they form a single digit finally for the purpose of checking whether the figure is harmonious with the date figure. This may be termed as the name figure.

    A = 1, B = 2, C = 3, D = 4, E = 5, F = 8, G = 3, H = 5, I = 1, J = 1, K = 2, L = 3, M = 4, N = 5, O = 7, P = 8, Q = 1, R = 2, S = 3, T = 4, U = 6, V = 6, W = 6, X = 5, Y = 1, Z = 7.

    Thus, if the name is Kapil Dev, then the figure will be (2 + 1 + 8 + 1 + 3) = 15 or (1 + 5) = 6 for Kapil and (4 + 5 + 6) = 15 or (1 + 5) = 6 for Dev. It gives a total of (15 + 15) = 30 or (3 + 0) = 3 for the name figure.

Often the individual words of the name yields a total of two digits. If one of the words yields a total of 13 or 16, then care should be taken in choosing the other word/s of the name so that :

    (1) No other word should yield a total of 13 or 16. ... and

    (2) The sum total of all the words should not be 26 or 44.

    Finding some significant age-periods in a person's life :

The sum of all the figures in the date-month-year (as per English Calendar) also yields another fateful number, which should also be harmonious with the name figure. Thus, if someone's date of birth is 13/ 06/ 1954., then the fateful number will be (1 + 3 + 0 + 6 + 1 + 9 + 5 + 4) = 29. ... The 29th year or a period very close to it had brought in a significant change in the person's life. The person joined a multinational company in a responsible capacity at the age of 28 y. 8 m. 9 d.

And, the native's full name yields a total figure of (16 + 15 + 13) = 44. ... It is a fateful number - as the numerical figure yields (4 + 4) = 8, where the person's Date number is 4 (1 + 3 = 4); the combination of 4 and 8 is fateful. The 44th year or a period very close to it can also bring in a significant change in the person's life. The person, who is a Plastics Polymer Technologist and had been working in industries for more than 2 decades, switched over to an entirely different field (Astrology Software Development) at the age of 44 y. 5 m. 25 d.

To the current year as per English Calendar, add age-period (already completed). The figure of the resultant sum is to be obtained numerically. If the sum is obtained in two figures and it becomes either 13 or 16, then some unfavorable happening is feared. ...

[ However, this indication should not and must not be construed as confirmatory; rather the directional influences and trends of planetary transit operating in the person's chart deserve to be carefully checked. If during the time-period any of the major planets is found to be crossing over any of the unfavorable houses (the 6th or the 8th or the 12th house from the Ascendant or the Moon), then the person will have to remain careful and cautious. ]

Thus, if a person had been born in 1954, then in 1996, competed age-period had been = 42. This 42 added to the current year yields ( 1996 + 42 ) = 2038. Upon numerical addition, it yields ( 2 + 0 + 3 + 8 ) = 13. ... There had been a major unfavorable happening during the year. One of his close relatives expired. ... The person's Ascendant is Leo, and a dire malefic planet (Saturn) in transit was in sign Pisces (the 8th house from the Ascendant) when this had happened.

Similarly, in another person's case, the person had been born in 1945, then in 1996, competed age-period had been = 51. This 51 added to the current year yields ( 1996 + 51 ) = 2047. Upon numerological addition, it yields ( 2 + 0 + 4 + 7 ) = 13. ... In this case also, there had been a major unfavorable happening during the year. In this case also, one of his close relatives expired. ... In this case also, the person's Ascendant is Leo, and a dire malefic planet (Saturn) in transit was in sign Pisces (the 8th house from the Ascendant) when this had happened.

The resultant figure when brought to a single digit if found to yield 8, then the concerned person may have to face some kind of disruption or disappointment while if the figure sums up to 3 or 6 or 5 or 2, the outcome is generally found to be favorable.

    Mutually Harmonious Numbers :

1, 2, 4 and 7 are in harmony with one another. So, if the date number is 1 or 2 or 4 or 7, then the name should yield 1 or 2 or 4 or 7.

3, 6 and 9 are in harmony with one another. So, if the date number is 3 or 6 or 9, then the name should yield 3 or 6 or 9.

5 and 8 are in harmony with each other. So, if the date number is 5 or 8, then the name should yield 5 or 8.

    Mutually Antagonistic numbers :

4 and 8 are mutually antagonistic numbers. So, if the date figure is either 4 or 8, then care should be taken that the name figure does not yield either 4 or 8 - since that can bring in unfavorable influences.

Symbolic significations from the name figures obtained numerically :

The symbolic significations for the figures obtained from the individual words of the name and also from the full name as obtained numerically have been given hereunder (from no.-1 to no.-22). The figure for the full name is often found to exceed 22; in such cases, 22 should be subtracted from the figure for the full name for finding it's corresponding symbolic significations. Thus, if the figure becomes 29, then to take it as ( 29 - 22 ) or 7.

  • Prospect of Acquiring Education

    "Sanmaanasaabaasvilaasahamsee Karnaavatamseekritapadmakosha,
    Toshadsheshabhimatam Visheshaadevapi Bhasha Bhavataam Dadaatu."

As usual, first of all we have got to check for the presence of the combinations indicating the possibility of having some serious physical or mental handicaps. Although such things are really very rare, still there are certain serious handicaps, which can totally block the prospect of education. If any serious affliction to eye-sight and/ or serious kind of mental unsoundness is found to be present in the chart, then it would be manifestly absurd to proceed any further.

Judging the prospect of education is not at all an easy task, which can be done merely at a glance. The process is rather very complex -- since so many houses and so many planets are involved. It is to be remembered that for judging education, we have to check the concerned houses (which are far too many) and the concerned planets (which are also many) - both main and subsidiary. It should not and must not be concluded from a single house (like the 4th or the 5th), and a single planet (Mercury) as it's natural significator.

IMPORTANCE OF THE 2nd HOUSE :

The 2nd-house indicates 'aptitude' and proficiency, and the Moon can be taken as the natural significator for it. If the 2nd-lord is situated in exaltation-sign or in own-sign or in own-nakshatra, or natural benefic planet/s is/ are situated in the 2nd-house, or natural benefic planet/s aspect the 2nd-house, or if an exalted planet is situated in the 2nd-house, or if the Moon is situated in the 2nd-house, or if the Moon and the 2nd-lord are conjoined together or if these two planets aspect each other, then excellent aptitude and proficiency are indicated. If the Ascendant-lord and the 2nd-lord are involved in sign-exchange or nakshatra-exchange, or the Ascendant-lord is situated in the 2nd-house, or the 2nd-lord is situated in the Ascendant, then also the indications will be similar.

IMPORTANCE OF THE 3rd HOUSE :

Among other things, the 3rd-house indicates patience and 'informal studies'; Saturn can be taken as the natural significator for these. If the 3rd-lord is situated in exaltation-sign or in own-sign or in own-nakshatra, or natural benefic planet/s is/ are situated in the 3rd-house, or natural benefic planet/s aspect the 3rd-house, or if an exalted planet is situated in the 3rd-house, or if Saturn is situated in the 3rd-house, or if Saturn and the 3rd-lord are conjoined together, or if these two planets aspect each other, then extreme patience and informal studies to an exceptional extent are indicated. If the Ascendant-lord and the 3rd-lord are involved in sign-exchange or nakshatra-exchange, or the Ascendant-lord is situated in the 3rd-house, or the 3rd-lord is situated in the Ascendant, then also the indications will be similar.

The very same 3rd-house also indicates personality, writing ability and 'hand-writing'; the Sun can be taken as the natural significator for these. If the 3rd-lord is situated in exaltation-sign or in own-sign or in own-nakshatra, or natural benefic planet/s is/ are situated in the 3rd-house, or natural benefic planet/s aspect the 3rd-house, or if an exalted planet is situated in the 3rd-house, or if the Sun is situated in the 3rd-house, or if the Sun and the 3rd-lord are conjoined together, or if these two planets aspect each other, then impressive personality, exceptional writing ability and 'beautiful' handwriting are indicated. If the Ascendant-lord and the 3rd-lord are involved in sign-exchange or nakshatra-exchange, or the Ascendant-lord is situated in the 3rd-house, or the 3rd-lord is situated in the Ascendant, then also the indications will be similar.

SPECIAL ROLE OF THE ASCENDANT-LORD :

The Ascendant-lord -- even if it is a natural malefic planet -- is the 'super-benefic' planet in the chart. If the Ascendant-lord is situated in a sign or aspect it, then the strength of the sign is increased; and if the Ascendant-lord is conjoined with a planet or aspects it, then the strength of the planet is increased. If the Ascendant-lord is situated in the 4th-house or the 5th-house, or if it aspects the 4th-house or the 5th-house, or if it is conjoined with the 4th-lord or the 5th-lord, or if aspects the 4th-lord or the 5th-lord, then it is a favorable indication for having very good education.

CHECKING FOR "AFFLICTIONS" OF PLANETS :

In general, if a planet is debilitated or combust or eclipsed or retrograde or conjoined with a natural malefic planet or a natural malefic planet aspects it, then it is considered to be afflicted. But when we are specifically considering the prospect of education, certain special points deserve to be duly noted -- since many of these so-called 'affliction' may not act as a hindering factor at all.

    Debilitation :

For education, except for the Moon, debilitation can be ignored altogether. But if Moon is found to be debilitated, then the native may not have good aptitude, or may not be endowed with good proficiency -- particularly during the early age-period (till about standard VIII or so); if other things are favorable, then proficiency might become gradually improved up to a considerable extent -- beginning from around the indicated time-period.

    Combustion :

For education, combustion of Mercury is totally ignored. A combust Mercury may and can rather give good proficiency and aptitude for learning things. But the combustion of major planets (Mars, Jupiter and Saturn) deserves to be noted with care -- since it can adversely affect the prospect of having good education; it will be more so if the combust planet becomes the lord of- or situated in- the 4th- or the 5th- or the 2nd- houses. The adverse effect of combustion will be more if the Ascendant is Leo (since the combustion-causing planet -- the Sun -- itself becomes the Ascendant-lord).

In case of combustion, the effect will definitely depend on the longitudinal distance from the Sun. If the distance is not more than 1*, then the affliction is really very serious (as it indicates possible serious health-affection, and surely indicates serious problem with eye-sight); if the distance is more than 1* but not more than 3*20', then also it is a hindering factor for education (and profession). If the distance is more than 3*20', then the effect won't be much adverse.

'Eclipsed' condition (close to either Rahu or Ketu) :

For want of a better term, closeness to Rahu or Ketu had been termed as 'eclipsed' condition. As usual, the effect is more if the Sun or the Moon gets 'eclipsed'. Mercury enjoys the complete exception -- as being in an angular (kendra) house from Rahu, it gains strength. For the remaining planets (Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn), it is only a minor hindering factor; however, this is dependent on the longitudinal distance (from Rahu or Ketu) -- the affliction is very serious if the distance is not more than 1*; and if the distance is more than 1* but within 3*20', then also things might be pretty bad.

If the distance (from Rahu or Ketu) is 6* or more, then the adverse influence of conjunction with Rahu or Ketu can be ignored altogether.

    Retrogression :

For education, except for the Venus, retrogression is rather beneficial; if an education-related planet is retrograde, then it can be taken as a source of strength. If Mercury is retrograde, then the person becomes clever and very practical; if Mars is retrograde, then the person becomes ambitious and is endowed with a sense of pride (which is indirectly an encouraging factor for having good for education); if Jupiter is retrograde, then although the person may have lopsided views and is very much money-minded, he/ she possesses excellent knowledge in grammar, language and literature; if Saturn* is retrograde, then the person is endowed with concentration and he/ she is very much likely to acquire good command in languages other than mother-tongue, including 'foreign' languages (like English, French, German, etc) -- both spoken and written.

However, if Saturn* is retrograde, we have got to look for the presence of the modifying influences in the chart as it may and can give temporary- or permanent- "break" in education. If Saturn is strong (exalted or in own-house or in own-nakshatra), then the "break" in education is likely to be temporary and it may result owing to change of circumstances, or for some undesired constraints; but if Saturn is not strong, or if in spite of being strong it is much afflicted, then the "break" may be permanent and/ or it may result owing to lack of proficiency or failure in qualifying examination (which may even be admission test or preliminary screening).

If Venus is not strong (i.e., not in exaltation, or in own-sign, or in own-nakshatra), and if it is retrograde, then we have to check whether some modifying influences are operating in the chart; otherwise, with the onset of adolescence, the person may develop unusual interest in matters concerning the 'other' gender -- which may and can adversely affect academic proficiency, and in turn may mar the prospect of having higher education.

Conjunction with (or aspected by) natural malefic planets :

    (a) Conjunction with (or aspected by) the Ascendant-lord :

As mentioned earlier, even if the Ascendant-lord is a natural malefic, it is functionally a 'super-benefic'. So, conjunction with the Ascendant-lord will be very beneficial for education.

    (b) Conjunction with (or aspected by) a "yoga-karaka" planet (natural- or temporal-) :

If the natural malefic planet is a natural- or temporal- 'yoga-karaka' planet, then it's conjunction with- or aspect to- any education-related planet will only have desirable- and beneficial- influences.

    (c) Conjunction with Rahu :

Except for the Moon, conjunction of Rahu is quite beneficial; if the Moon is situated in close conjunction with Rahu, then the person's thinking might become confused -- which is not at all desirable for having good education. As Rahu signifies 'intution' (or capacity to conclude without much of thinking) and also 'desire' for having the best things of life, Rahu's conjunction with any education-related planet will make him/ her aspire for good education -- so that he/ she can become quite 'respectable' in society by dint of his/ her educational accomplishments.

    (d) Conjunction with Ketu :

Ketu is the significator for Computer-education. If Mercury is strong (in exaltation, or in own-sign, or in own-nakshatra), and if it is situated in an education-related house (the 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th or 11th), while Ketu is also placed in any of such houses, then the person can look forward to acquiring good proficiency in Computer operations -- which has been becoming increasingly popular now-a-days.

However, Ketu's close conjunction with Saturn is not very desirable. If modifying influences are not found to be present in the chart, then it indicates the possibility of having serious family-problems, or probable loss of some close relation/s by untimely demise or separation, and/ or acute financial constraints during sometime in life -- which may become a hindering factor, and may become the root-cause for having either temporary- or permanent- "break" in education.

    IMPORTANCE OF THE 4th & THE 5th HOUSES :

The 4th-house indicates general education, whereas the 5th-house indicates intellect, memory and merit. The natural significator for both the houses is Mercury. The planets situated in either or both of these two houses (if any), and the planets aspecting either- or both- of these two houses (if any) have much of bearing on the prospect of education. The sign-position, house-position, etc conditions of the 4th-lord and the 5th-lord have also to be taken into account.

If the 4th-lord is situated in exaltation sign or in own-sign or in own nakshatra, or one or more natural benefic planet/s is/ are situated in the 4th-house, or natural benefic planet/s aspect the 4th-house, or if an exalted planet is situated in the 4th-house, or if Mercury is situated in the 4th-house, or if Mercury and the 4th-lord are conjoined together, or if these two planets aspect each other, then it can very safely be concluded that the person will have good education.

If the 5th-lord is situated in exaltation sign or in own-sign or in own nakshatra, or one or more natural benefic planet(s) is/ are situated in the 5th-house, or natural benefic planet(s) is/ are aspecting the 5th-house, or if an exalted planet is situated in the 5th-house, or if Mercury is situated in the 5th-house, or if Mercury and the 5th-lord are conjoined together, or if these two planets aspect each other, then also it can very safely be concluded that the person will have good education.

INTER-RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE ANGULAR- TRINAL- LORDS :

Any connection between the 4th-house (or 4th-lord) and the 5th-house (or 5th-lord) gives 'application-oriented' or professional education; like engineering, technology, medicine, accountancy, law, etc. Thus, if the 4th-lord and the 5th-lord are involved in sign-exchange or nakshatra-exchange, or if these two lords are conjoined together, or if they aspect each other -- while Mercury is also strong -- then 'application-oriented' or professional education may and can be expected.

Besides Ascendant and the 4th, there are other angular (kendra) houses -- the 7th and the 10th. And, besides the 5th, the 9th is also a trinal (trikona) house. Any exchange or one-way relationship between the lord of an angular house in a trinal house, or vice versa, is also a very favorable indication for having good education. The connection involving the 5th- (house or lord) generally gives 'application-oriented' education; if the connection involves the 7th, then it may have some connection with business or law; if the connection involves the 9th, then it may give higher education, and/ or it may have some connection with medical education.

    IMPORTANCE OF THE 8th, 9th & 12th HOUSES : HIGHER EDUCATION & RESEARCH :

IMPORTANCE OF THE 9th HOUSE :

The 9th-house (and 9th-lord) indicates higher education/ qualification (general post-graduation, higher professional education, 'formal' research*, etc). Jupiter is the significator for wisdom; as such, it is considered to be a natural significator for higher education.

If the 4th-lord is situated in the 9th-house, or if the 9th-lord is situated in the 4th-house, or if these two lords are conjoined together, or these two lords aspect each other, then the person will have higher education/ professional education, in which connection he/ she may have to go to a distant- (or even foreign-) place.

If the 5th-lord is situated in the 9th-house, or if the 9th-lord is situated in the 5th-house, or if these two lords are conjoined together, or these two lords aspect each other, then the person will have higher education/ professional education; he/ she may secure a professional qualification from a foreign institute of repute and/ or through a correspondence course.

IMPORTANCE OF THE 12th HOUSE :

However, serious research* (or 'real search' -- which might be informal studies continued for a very long duration) comes under the governance of the 12th-house (and 12th-lord). Here, Saturn may be taken as a co-significator; this is in addition to the general significator Mercury and special significator Jupiter. If Saturn is situated in the 12th-house or aspects it, while the 4th-lord or the 9th-lord is also situated in the same house or aspects it, then it is a favorable indication : the person will continue his/ her informal studies for a very long duration, and will probably come out with some special findings or observations of your own.

As the 12th happens to be the 4th from the 9th (or the 9th from the 4th), it signifies temporary shifting of residence in connection with education. If education-related planets are inter-related with the 12th-house, then the person may go to a distant inland place (or even a foreign country) in connection with education. If the lord of the 4th- or the 5th- or the 9th- is situated in the 12th-house, or if the 12th-lord is situated in any of these houses (the 4th- or the 5th- or the 9th-), then the person may have to go to a distant place and stay there for a long duration in connection with higher education/ professional education. Alternately, even if you do not go to a distant place, there are chances that you may have to stay in a school/ college/ university hostel/ boarding house.

IMPORTANCE OF THE 8th HOUSE :

The 8th-house has governance over untoward happenings, accidental mishaps, death, mysteries, forensic studies, mystique and occult subjects (like Astrology, etc). If the 8th-house or the 8th-lord becomes related to the 4th-house or 4th-lord or the 5th-house or 5th-lord, the 5th-house is well-disposed, and Mercury is also strong, then a person may have advance studies and conduct researches in the fields of mystique and occult subjects like Astrology. A strong Mars in relation to the 8th-house may give informal studies and/ or higher education in connection with crimes and criminal- psychology, behavior, proceedings, laws, clauses, terms, etc and/ or also about detective investigation, forensic procedures, etc.

IMPORTANCE OF THE NATURAL SIGNIFICATOR PLANET (MERCURY) :

The natural significator for education -- formal and informal, general and professional -- is the planet Mercury. So, we must look for the sign-position, house-position, etc conditions* of Mercury in the chart. If Mercury is situated in exaltation sign or in own-sign or in own-nakshatra, then Mercury is deemed to be strong.

IMPORTANCE OF BHINNA-ASHTAKAVARGA OF MERCURY :

The Bhinna-Ashtakavarga strength of Mercury in it's placement in the chart, and also in all the houses -- most of which are either directly- or indirectly- related to education and/ or information in some way or other -- may and can offer some vital and very useful information not only regarding the prospect of education but also about the possible areas of interest. Not only in it's own placement sign, but also in the other signs (corresponding to various houses), if the number of benefic dots in Mercury's Bhinna-Ashtakavarga is found to be 7 or 8, definitely it is a source of strength; the beneficial results which will accrue will have to be interpreted from the significations of the concerned house, wherein it is found.

IMPORTANCE OF THE 10th HOUSE :

The 10th-house and the 10th-lord rules over "Knowledge", which would find effective utilization in the person's profession. If the 10th-house or the 10th-lord has any connection with the 4th-house or 4th-lord or the 5th-house or 5th-lord -- that is, if the 10th-lord is conjoined with- or aspected by- the 4th-lord, or if the 10th-lord is conjoined with- or aspected by- the 5th-lord, or if the 10th-lord is situated in the nakshatra of the 5th-lord or a planet situated in the 5th-house, or if the 10th-lord is situated in the nakshatra of the 4th-lord or a planet situated in the 4th-house, then it may safely concluded that the person will have good education and informal studies as well -- which will have effective utilization in his/ her profession throughout his/ her working life.

CONSIDERATIONS FROM THE DIVISIONAL CHART "CHATURVIMSHAMSHA" :

Chaturvimshamsha (or D-24) is the divisional chart, which is given importance for judging the quality- and extent- of education. Every divisional chart has it's own significator (or karaka) -- whose sign-position, house-position, essential dignity (that is, if exalted or in own-sign), it's association, etc -- all in the same D-24 divisional chart is carefully considered.

The situation of planets in the various education-related houses (2nd = Aptitude, proficiency; 3rd = Skill of writing, informal studies; 4th = General education (graduation degree/ diploma); 5th = Intelligence, memory, merit; 9th = Higher education (Post-graduation/ professional qualification; 10th = Knowledge; 11th = Realization of the object in view) are to be noted carefully.

Mercury's situation in movable (chara) signs in the D-24 chart indicates that the person will be capable of thinking very fast and arrive at conclusions almost instantly. The situation of Mars in any sign of Mercury (Gemini or Virgo) further enhances it.

The situation of the 4th-lord -- of the natal chart -- if situated in any sign of Mercury (Gemini or Virgo) indicates the possibility of having good education (graduation degree/ diploma). Similarly the situation of the 9th-lord -- again of the natal chart -- if situated in any sign of Mercury (Gemini or Virgo) indicates the possibility of having higher education (post-graduation/ professional qualification).

As is customarily considered in natal charts, in D-24 chart also, if the lord of an angular (kendra) house is situated in a trinal (trikona) house, or vice-versa, or if one angular lord is conjoined with one trinal lord, then it indicates a fair degree of possibility that the person will have education in an "application-oriented" field; engineering or technology may have some chance.

Special role of the planet (if any) situated in the 11th-house in the D-24 chart :

Planets situated in the 11th-house in the D-24 chart are important. If there is a natural benefic planet is situated in the 11th-house in the D-24 chart, good education is assured. If Jupiter or Venus or Mercury is situated in the 11th-house in the D-24 chart, the person is very much likely to acquire an educational/ professional qualification from a highly reputed and prestigious institution.

If in the Chaturvimshamsha (D-24) chart, a planet is found to be situated in the 11th from the Ascendant, then the person is very much likely to acquire an educational-/ professional- qualification from a highly reputed and prestigious institution. It's additional indication in respect of the stream of education might be concluded accordingly as given under :

Jupiter : It is possible that your education might have some connection with the fields like finance, accountancy, law, education, religion, etc.

Venus : It is possible that your education might have some connection with the fields like engineering, business management, optics, fashion-design, etc.

Mercury : It is possible that your education might have some connection with the fields like science, technology, journalism, commerce, foreign trade, etc.

Mars : It is possible that your education might have some connection with the fields like metallurgy, chemicals, architecture, surgery, dentistry, hotel management, etc.

Saturn : It is possible that your education might have some connection with the fields like agriculture, geology, geophysics, mining, industry, actuary, etc.

Moon : It is possible that your education might be in general stream; although medicine or pharmacy also has some chance. (but in respect of your profession, you may have connection with the general public.)

Sun : It is possible that your education might be in general stream; (but in respect of your profession, you may have connection with the senior officials of various government departments.)

SPECIAL NOTE for Astrology learners and interested readers (in respect of divisional chart, D-24) :

It is to be carefully remembered that since the D-24 divisional chart is a highly "magnified" (24 times) chart, high degree of accuracy of the time of birth is a very crucial factor. It can be well understood as the Ascendant in the D-24 chart changes sign within about 5 minutes of time! So, if someone's furnished time of birth is expected to be accurate within about 15 minutes of time on either side, then it will obviously be manifestly absurd to check the house-positions in D-24 chart at all.

And, even if the furnished time of birth is believed to be very accurate, then also we should check whether the Ascendant's krishamsha (i.e., longitude bereft of sign falls anywhere close to 0*, or 1*15' or it's multiples. This is because, in such cases, the position can as well be shifted to an adjacent sign (previous or next as the case may be) instead, and the entire "picture" could be capable of being changed altogether.

It is to be clearly borne in mind that the planetary "aspects" are not considered in the divisional charts.

Above all, undue emphasis should not be laid on the divisional charts (including this D-24). This is for the simple reason that -- after all -- the divisional charts are not the factual "astronomical" picture of the heavens; and their significations are considered to be "symbolic" only.

IMPORTANCE OF THE BHINNA-ASTAKAVARGA STRENGTH (OF BENEFIC PLANETS) :

The natural benefic planets are : Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and the (waxing) Moon. Besides these, the Ascendant-lord, the natural "yoga-karaka" planet (if any), the temporal "yoga-karaka" planet (if any), any planet is in exaltation, in own-sign or in own-nakshatra (if any), then -- even if these are natural malefic -- they are to be considered as to be circumstantially "benefic" planets -- for the purpose of judging the prospect of education.

We have got to check the individual contribution of benefic dots of these planets in the various house-signs (all of which somehow become connected with education -- either directly or indirectly). If the cumulative contribution of the benefic dots are found to be fairly- to really- good in at least two of the main education-related house-signs (the 2nd-, the 4th-, the 5th- and the 9th-), it goes without saying that the person will surely acquire good- to excellent- education.

If in the Ascendant, the total number of benefic dots (contributed by the planets favorably disposed for education) is found to be very good, then it will make the person intelligent, suave and alert -- in respect of gathering useful information, and he/ she will be capable of putting them into use in an effective way and purposeful manner.

If in the 2nd-house, the total number of benefic dots (contributed by the planets favorably disposed for education) is found to be very good, then the person will be endowed with good aptitude and academic proficiency; he/ she will possess the gift of eloquence and will be very dependable in respect of monetary transactions.

If in the 3rd-house, the total number of benefic dots (contributed by the planets favorably disposed for education) is found to be very good, then the person will be endowed with exceptional writing ability; he/ she will be very efficient in respect of handling correspondence/ communications and dealing with ever-changing lot of information about the latest developments.

If in the 4th-house, the total number of benefic dots (contributed by the planets favorably disposed for education) is found to be very good, then it is a highly fortunate combination, and the person will be very fortunate in respect of having a good level of education.

If in the 5th-house, the total number of benefic dots (contributed by the planets favorably disposed for education) is found to be very good, then the person will be endowed with sharp intelligence and retentive memory. He/ she will be fortunate in respect of having a good level of education, which might be in an application-oriented field. You might have some interest in- and good knowledge of- speculative investments (as in shares, etc).

If in the 6th-house, the total number of benefic dots (contributed by the planets favorably disposed for education) is found to be very good, then if the person has the inclination, then he/ she may acquire considerable knowledge and information about diseases/ medicines by having formal or informal studies. (Even if he/ she does not become a qualified medical practitioner, his/ her profession or hobby may have some connection with medicines.)

If in the 7th-house, the total number of benefic dots (contributed by the planets favorably disposed for education) is found to be very good, then the person will be endowed with sharp intelligence, ready wit and a good sense of humor. His/ her business sense will be quite well developed and he/ she will be very successful in public dealings.

If in the 8th-house, the total number of benefic dots (contributed by the planets favorably disposed for education) is found to be very good, then the person are very much likely to have much of interest in the occult and mystique subjects (like Astrology, Palmistry, Numerology, etc).

If in the 9th-house, the total number of benefic dots (contributed by the planets favorably disposed for education) is found to be very good, then the person is very much likely to have higher education; it appears entirely possible that he/ she may successfully complete some professional course for enhancing his/ her worth.

If in the 10th-house, the total number of benefic dots (contributed by the planets favorably disposed for education) is found to be very good, then it is a highly favorable combination; the person is very much likely to gather in-depth knowledge and useful information about the latest technological developments, which he/ she would effectively utilize in your area of profession.

If in the 11th-house, the total number of benefic dots (contributed by the planets favorably disposed for education) is found to be very good, then it is a favorable combination; the person will have deep interest in a diverse range of subjects, in which he/ she will gather knowledge and information. This will help him/ her to become the center of attraction in the circle of his/ her friends and acquaintances, who will value his/ her opinions and occasionally look forward to him/ her for advice.

If in the 12th-house, the total number of benefic dots (contributed by the planets favorably disposed for education) is found to be very good, then the person will have deep interest in some subject of special interest and will continue your informal studies for a very long duration; he/ she may probably come up with some special findings or observations of his/ her own.

CHECKING FROM EXCHANGE OF PLANETARY "TERMS" :

Egyptian "planetary terms" are relatively more popularly used, and these appear to be more reliable. The "terms" are certain longitudinal sections in every sign, somewhat differing from sign to sign. These are similar to "Hadda-Chakra" originally used in Varshaphala charts of Tajaka-system. These are also used in Western Astrology -- particularly in Horary charts; some more open-minded experimenters have used them in natal charts also, and reported as having successfully obtained some notable results. The five 'tara'-grahas (Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn) can become the term-lords; but the Sun and the Moon cannot.

When a pair of planets are situated in each other's "term", they behave as if they are influencing each other, and the qualitative characteristics which are in common to both seem to become more pronounced. The exchange of planetary "terms" are considered for ascertaining the person's inclinations and interest. However, for obtaining beneficial results, it is a pre-requisite that Mercury should be strong (in exaltation or in own-sign or in own-nakshatra) and/ or well-placed in the chart.

  • Importance of the Bhinna-Astakavarga strength (of benefic planets) :

Mars and Saturn both are pronouncedly "technical" planets, and both of them are chiefly concerned with the usefulness in practical fields of application. As such, if Mars and Saturn are involved in "term"-exchange, it indicates that the person will have much of interest for studying "application-oriented" subjects like Engineering or Technology. He/ she may also easily acquire considerable expertise in various kinds of advanced Computer applications.

Mercury is the planet of intelligence and education, where Jupiter is the natural significator for wisdom, prudence, growth and abundance. As such, if Mercury and Jupiter are involved in "term"-exchange, it indicates that the person will have much of interest for studying language and literature. He/ she is very much likely to have extra-ordinary writing ability; it also appears quite probable that he/ she may be a contributor in some journals, or even may become an author.

Mercury is the planet of intelligence and education, where Venus is the natural significator for culture, refinement and fine arts. As such, if Mercury and Venus are involved in "term"-exchange, it indicates that the person will have much of interest for studying language and literature. He/ she is very much likely to have artistic inclinations in a profound degree, or you may be greatly interested in photography. (Your profession or hobby may have some connection with some field of fine arts, or the camera.)

Similarly, Jupiter stands for justness and righteousness, whereas Venus signifies perfect order, balance and harmony; both the planets are significators for affluence as well. As such, if Jupiter and Venus are involved in "term"-exchange, it indicates that the person will have keen interest for studying law or finance-management. (Alternately, you might be overly occupied with the affairs of running a brisk business of your own -- which will keep you amidst plenty and abundance.)

The Sun and the Moon are political planets. They are the significators for authority and power by virtue of being heirs. If the Sun and the Moon are involved in "term"-exchange, it indicates that the person is very much likely to have high aspirations, and prepare himself/ herself for successfully competing in the examinations for the top-notch administrative service.

The Sun and Mars both signify such distinguished people, who are in a position to exercise punishment power. If the Sun and Mars are involved in "term"-exchange, it indicates that person is very much likely to have high aspirations, and prepare himself/ herself for occupying senior and powerful positions. The field of active politics, defence or police establishments, etc may attract him/ her; alternately, it might be surgery.

DETERMINING VARIOUS STREAMS OF EDUCATION :

MEDICINE/ SURGERY/ PHARMACY : As usual, since 'Medicine' is an application-oriented field, there must at first be some inter-relationship with the 4th- and 5th- houses and/ or their lords (or such a relationship should be found between any other angular and trinal houses). The Ascendant-lord situated in the 9th or the 9th-lord situated in the Ascendant, or if these two lords are conjoined together or aspect each other, then it may and can induce the interest in the native's mind for studying medicine.

The Moon denotes medicines; so the Moon should have some connection with the 4th- or 5th- or 9th- or 10th- houses (and/ or the respective lords). Since the 6th-house indicates the 'disease', and the 11th-house indicates the 'cure', if the 4th-house and/ or it's lord is/ are connected with the 6th-house or the 6th-lord or the 11th-house or the 11th-lord, then a person is very much likely to be interested to study medicine. The 8th-house indicates accidental mishaps, serious injuries, danger to life, etc. So, the connection of the 8th-house and/ or 8th-lord may take one to Surgery.

Since the purpose of studying medicine is for saving life, the significator for life -- Jupiter -- should be well-placed, and should be free from serious affliction. However, if Jupiter is debilitated, and it is in close conjunction with Mars (exalted) or Saturn (own-sign) , then it may rather be an advantageous factor for studying medicine. But if Jupiter is situated very close to Sun (that is, becoming badly combust), then it is very much likely to be a handicap.

Since good academic proficiency is a pre-requisite, Mercury should be well-placed and/ or the 4th-house (or the 5th-house) should be strong (that is, the lord of the house-sign should be in exaltation or in own-sign or in own-nakshatra; or a planet having similar strength should remain in the house). As the course requires clearing an entrance examination, the presence of a natural malefic planet in the 6th (or in the 3rd or in the 11th) will be very desired. If good academic proficiency and/ or capacity to successfully clear the competitive entrance examination are/ is not indicated in the chart, then it can take one to the next level -- like Pharmacy.

The close conjunction of the Sun and Ketu are often found in the charts of medical men. If the Sun is stronger than Mars, then the stream may be medicine proper; but if Mars is a stronger and if it is found to exert more influences, then the native may take up Surgery. The close conjunction of Rahu takes one to Anesthesia. Similarly placed Saturn may take one to orthopedics or pathology. The modifying influences of various planets and also those of various signs will have to be checked for the purpose of ascertaining the probable specific areas of specialization.

ENGINEERING/ TECHNOLOGY : As usual, since 'Engineering/ Technology' are application-oriented fields, there must at first be some inter-relationship with the 4th- and 5th- houses and/ or their lords (or such a relationship should be found between any other angular and trinal houses). The combined influence of Mars and Saturn leads one to study of Engineering and/ or Technology. As such, the combinations can be : (i) Mars and Saturn conjoined together, or (ii) Mars aspecting Saturn, or (iii) Saturn aspecting Mars.

If Mars is exalted or debilitated, and is in conjunction with Saturn, the possibility of Engineering becomes more in comparison; if Mars aspects Saturn, then also it induces the inclination of taking up the study of Engineering. If Venus is in exaltation or in own-sign or in own-nakshatra, or is conjoined with or aspected by Jupiter, then the chances of taking up Engineering is considerably increased.

Similarly, if Saturn is exalted or debilitated, and is in conjunction with Mars, the possibility of Technology becomes more in comparison; if Saturn aspects Mars, then also it induces the inclination of taking up the study of Technology. If Venus is neither in exaltation nor in own-sign nor in own-nakshatra, and is conjoined with or aspected by Saturn, then the chances of taking up Technology is considerably increased.

COMPUTER EDUCATION : The strength of Mercury is the prime indicator; if Mercury is in exaltation or in own-sign or in own-nakshatra, and it is situated in the 4th- or 5th- or 8th- or 9th- or 10th- or 11th- houses, then it will be an asset. Ketu is the co-significator. If Ketu situated in sign Scorpio or in own-nakshatra, or is situated in any of the above-mentioned houses (4th- or 5th- or 8th- or 9th- or 10th- or 11th-), then it will be an added advantage.

Mars is the significator for "Programming". If Mars is situated in exaltation or in own-sign or in own-nakshatra, or is situated in any of the above-mentioned houses (4th- or 5th- or 8th- or 9th- or 10th- or 11th-), or is situated in the Ascendant, then one may and can become a good programmer.

Venus is the significator for "Graphic Design". If Venus is situated in exaltation or in own-sign or in own-nakshatra, or is situated in any of the above-mentioned houses (4th- or 5th- or 8th- or 9th- or 10th- or 11th-), or is situated in the Ascendant, then one may and can be a good graphic designer.

If the 8th-lord is situated in the Ascendant or the 10th-house or the 5th-house, or aspects any of these houses, or is conjoined with the lord of any of these houses, then the person is very much likely to have some connection with programming and designing of software related to subjects like Astrology.

SCIENCE SUBJECTS : The third- and the sixth- houses denote the science subjects, and the natural malefic planets Mars, Saturn and Rahu are the significators. Of course, at least one of these should preferably have some connection with Mercury -- which is the natural significator for general education. Out of Mars and Saturn, if one is the influencing planet -- that is, the planet is the the 3rd-lord or the 6th-lord, or is situated in the 3rd-house or in the 6th-house, while the other is the lord of the 4th-lord or the 5th-lord or is placed in the 4th-house or the 5th-house, and both are influencing each other by conjunction or aspect, or one of them is influencing the other by aspect while the other is influencing the 3rd-lord or the 6th-lord by conjunction or aspect, then study of Science subjects are indicated.

Saturn denotes Physics, Mars denotes Chemistry, while Mercury denotes Mathematics. If Saturn is stronger, or is influencing Mercury by conjunction or aspect, then stress is laid more on Physics; if Mars is stronger, or is influencing Mercury by conjunction or aspect, then stress is laid more on Chemistry; if Neither of these two planets (Saturn and Mars) influences Mercury, then stress might be laid more on Mathematics. Rahu denotes poisonous chemicals; as such, if Rahu is in the 4th-house or in the 5th-house or is connected with the 4th-lord or the 5th-lord or with Mars, then possibility of having higher study in Chemistry becomes more. If the influence of Saturn is absent, but that of Jupiter is present, then there is possibility of studying Bio-Science (Zoology and Botany).

ARTS SUBJECTS : Mercury and Venus, are the significator planets for Arts Subjects; to some extent, the Moon is also so. If one of these two planets (Mercury or Venus) becomes the lord of the 4th-, or 5th-, or 9th- or 10th- house, while another of these two is situated in any of these houses will impart much of interest in Arts Subjects. If Venus is situated in the 4th- or 5th- or 10th- house, and is conjoined with- or involved in sign-exchange or nakshatra-exchange or term- exchange with any natural benefic planet (Mercury or Moon or Jupiter), then also there will be great interest in studying Arts Subjects. If Mercury and Venus are conjoined together, or if Mercury is in conjunction with the Moon, or if Venus is in conjunction with the Moon, then also some special interest in Arts Subjects is signified.

LANGUAGE/ LITERATURE : Mercury and Jupiter are the significator planets for Language and Literature. If one of these two planets becomes the lord of the 4th-, or 5th-, or 9th- or 10th- house, while another of these two is situated in any of these houses will impart much of interest in Language and Literature. If Jupiter is situated in the 4th- or 5th- or 10th- house, and is conjoined with- or involved in sign-exchange or nakshatra-exchange or term- exchange with any natural benefic planet (Mercury or Moon or Venus), then also there will be great interest in studying Language/ Lterature. If Mercury and Jupiter are conjoined together, or if Mercury is in conjunction with the Moon, then also some special interest in Language/ Literature is signified.

LAW : The sign Libra denotes the Law-Court, and the natural significators are Venus and Jupiter. If either of these two planets are the lord of 4th-, or 5th-, or 9th-, or 10th- house, or is situated in any of these houses, while these two planets are in conjunction, or opposition, or in mutually 6/ 8 position, then the person might be interested in studying Law.

The mutual sign-exchange, or nakshatra-exchange between Jupiter and Venus gives much of interest in studying Law. If such mutual exchange is found between the 5th-lord and the 7th-lord, or between the 5th-lord and the 10th-lord, or between the 7th-lord and the 10th-lord, then also the person might be grossly interested in studying Law.

If the 6th-lord or the 8th-lord is situated in own-house, or either of these two lords is involved in sign-exchange or nakshatra-exchange with any other planet, then also there might be some interest in studying Law. If in this combination, Mars or Venus becomes the 6th-lord, or either of these two planets is situated in the 6th-house, then there could be some connection with Civil Law-suits; but if in this combination, Mars or Venus becomes the 8th-lord instead, or either of these two planets is situated in the 8th-house, then there could be some connection with Crime and/ or Criminal proceedings.

If the Sun or Saturn is in opposition with Mars, or if either of these two planets are involved in "square" aspect with Mars, then there could be some interest in studying Law, or for gathering information about legal matters -- as the person may face law-suit in connection with Property-Matters. If the 11th-lord is situated in the 4th-house, or if the 4th-lord is situated in the 11th-house, while a natural malefic planet is also situated in the 4th-house (or in the 11th-house), then also the indications could be quite similar in nature.

If the 7th-lord and the 8th-lord are involved in sign-exchange or nakshatra-exchange, then there is some possibility of having legal problems with marriage-partner, or business-partner, or the marriage-partner of the second child. If Rahu and Ketu are involved in nakshatra-exchange, then also the indications might be similar.

COMMERCE SUBJECTS : Mercury denotes transaction (and accounting) and the Moon denotes public connections. Any of these two planets situated in the 7th-house, while the other is having relationship with any of the major education- or profession- related houses (the 4th-, or the 5th- or the 10th-) may take one to commerce. The conjunction of the Moon and Mercury in any of these houses, or if one is situated while the other is aspecting, then also the native may be interested in commerce subjects. If Jupiter or Venus is also involved, then it confers comparatively higher rank and status. But if Saturn is involved instead, then the education leads one to a job, which involves responsibility and subordination -- with less remuneration.

ACCOUNTANCY : More commonly, the sign Virgo (and less commonly, the sign Gemini) is found to be important in the charts of Accountants; since the profession involves the connection with pen-and-paper, it's natural significator is Mercury. Jupiter or Venus (as they are the planets of abundance) is often connected with either of these signs or with their lord Mercury -- by conjunction or aspect. These planets should also certain inter-connection with the main education- or profession- related houses (the 4th-, or the 5th-, or the 10th-). Since Accountancy is also an application-oriented field, some sort of inter-relationship between the angular- (kendra) and trinal- (trikona) houses will be a very advantageous and supporting factor. But as the job involves more of responsibilty, and less of authority, Saturn's influence is frequently found to be present, and that of Mars is more often found to be absent.

AGRICULTURE : The signs Cancer and Aquarius, and the planets Moon and Saturn have much to do with Agriculture. If Saturn and Moon are in conjunction in sign Aquarius, then a possibility is indicated. Earthy signs Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are also found to have some connection pretty often; any of these signs or their lords becoming inter-connected by conjunction or aspect, and also having certain inter-connection with the main education- or profession- related houses (the 4th-, or the 5th-, or the 10th-). Since Agriculture is also an application-oriented field, some sort of inter-relationship between the angular- (kendra) and trinal- (trikona) houses will be a very advantageous and supporting factor.

ASTROLOGY : Mercury is the natural significator; it should be strong (i.e., in exaltation, or in own-sign, or in own-nakshatra); it should also be conjoined with- or in involved in mutual aspect with the 8th-lord -- as Astrology is signified mainly by the 8th-house. The 5th-house should be strong; the 5th-lord should be situated in the 5th-house, or aspecting the same. The connection of Rahu or Ketu with the planet Mercury, and with these houses (the 5th-house or the 8th-house) and/ or their lords (the 5th-lord and the 8th-lord) is very desirable.

The BAV-strength of Mercury in it's own placement-sign in it's own BAV (>= 4 dots) is advantageous. If Ketu is situated in the 5th-house or aspects it, it is conjoined with Mercury or the 5th-lord or the 8th-lord, and in Mercury's BAV, it obtains at least 3 dots in it's placement-sign, the combination may be said to be complete; these will make the ground ready in all respects for making one an Astrologer.

If Jupiter is situated in the 10th-house, conjoined with the 2nd-lord or the Moon, or aspecting the 2nd-lord or the Moon, then one can acquire great proficiency in Astrology. As Saturn is the significator for patience, perseverance, concentration, etc, Saturn's conjunction with Jupiter or the Moon or the 2nd-lord, or it's aspect falling on any of them may not at all be an unwelcome factor; it may rather be favourable for improving the propensities. If in the above combination, Jupiter is the 2nd-lord itself, then it will make the person a great speaker, who will receive invitation from the dignitaries for giving lectures in assemblies.

If Mercury is strong (i.e., in exaltation, or in own-sign, or in own-nakshatra), or is situated in the 4th-house or the 5th-house (or aspects any of these two houses), while the 8th-lord is situated in the Ascendant or aspects it, then the person will have considerable interest in Astrology -- at least during sometime in his/ her life.

If Mercury is strong (i.e., in exaltation, or in own-sign, or in own-nakshatra), or is situated in the 4th-house or the 5th-house (or aspects any of these two houses); and if the 8th-lord is situated in the 10th-house or aspects it, or is conjoined with the 10th-lord or involved in mutual aspect with it, then during sometime in his/ her life, then the person might be grossly interested in Astrology in connection with his/ her profession.

Astrology being an typical and uncommon subject, it comes under the governance of Uranus. If Uranus is in close conjunction with the Mercury or the 10th-lord or the 5th-lord, or situated in the sign of Mercury or the 10th-lord or the 5th-lord, or situated in the nakshatra of Mercury or the 10th-lord or the 5th-lord, then the person might be grossly interested in Astrology, take up the study of this subject very seriously, and even take up the stream as his/ her main line of profession. He/ she switch over to this field between age 35 and age 49 -- when Uranus in transit will be crossing over the 7th- and the 8th-house from it's own placement.

  • Sudarshan Chakra' Periods Sub-Periods

It is an experimentally 'modified' form of CHAKRA DASHA – which has been mentioned in the list of Dashas in Brihat Parashara Hora Shashtra (Vol.- 2). For maintaining a clear distinction, and also for the fact that placement of planets reckoned from three different points – Ascendant, Moon, and Sun – as these are in the popularly used Sudarshan Chakra, the name had been suitably changed.

In this method, there are 12 Major Periods of equal duration – of 10 years each. There are 10 Sub-Periods in any Major Period, and every Sub-Period is of equal duration – of 1 year each . Starting from the respective signs of commencement, the Sub-periods run in regular zodiacal order.

For the commencing Major-period, the 'Effective' Ascendant is the sign occupied by Jupiter (as considered in certain Nadi-grantha). It will remain the same for 10 years. Thereafter, the next sign from the position will become the 'Effective' Ascendant, and it will remain so for 10 years (from the 11th year to the 20th year), and so on.

The commencing Minor-period signs are the combination of (Ascendant-sign, Moon-sign, and Sun-sign). Then regardless of the operating Major-period, the succeeding Minor-periods of 1 year each will follow in regular zodiacal order – starting from each of the commencing Minor-period signs.

    Minor-period Sign from Ascendant = Expunger12 (Ascendant + Elapsed Age-period – 1)

    Minor-period Sign from Moon = Expunger12 (Moon Sign + Elapsed Age-period – 1)

    Minor-period Sign from Sun = Expunger12 (Sun Sign + Elapsed Age-period – 1)

The planets situated in these three Minor-period signs are the 'Influencing Planets', and the results of their influences will be gleamed with reference to the 'Effective Ascendant' operating at that age-period (that is, till the age of 10, it is the sign occupied by Jupiter; then up to the age of 20, the next sign from it; then up to the age of 30, the further next sign, and so on).

If for a particular age-period, it is seen that there is no Influencing planet as mentioned above, then the results will be determined from the Secondary Influencing Planets – which are:

    (1) The Lord of the 'Effective Ascendant'.

    (2) Planet(s) conjoined with the lord of the 'Effective Ascendant' – if any.

    (3) Planet(s) situated in the 'Effective Ascendant' – if any.

    (4) Planet(s) aspecting the 'Effective Ascendant' – if any.

    (5) Planet(s) aspecting the lord of the 'Effective Ascendant' – if any.

In case of the below given Example-1, during the period of the 30th (Varhaspatya) year, it is seen that there are no (Primary) Influencing Planets. As such, the Secondary Influencing Planets will indicate the results to expect:

    (1) The Lord of the 'Effective Ascendant' (Pisces): Jupiter.

    (2) Planet(s) conjoined with the lord of the 'Effective Ascendant': Venus.

    (3) Planet(s) situated in the 'Effective Ascendant': None.

    (4) Planet(s) aspecting the 'Effective Ascendant': Moon.

    (5) Planet(s) aspecting the lord of the 'Effective Ascendant': None.

    Example-1: Male; DOB 18/ 12/ 1973; Virgo - Ascendant & Moon, Scorpio – Mercury, Sagittarius – Sun & Rahu, Capricorn – Jupiter & Venus, Aries – Mars, and Gemini – Saturn (R) & Ketu.

For the person with the Lagna-Kundali as given above, the Major-periods and Sub-periods for a few years will be as under:

Age-period Duration (From - To) Effective Ascendant Influencing Planets reckoned from 3 points:

From Lagna From Moon From Sun

  • Timing of Events from Tara Dasha

(Parashari) *Tara Dasha is an useful time-direction system - which is very closely similar to the popularly used Vimshottari Dasha. Herein, the Dashas are not of planets like Sun, Moon, Mars, etc; rather, in the natural cycle of this system, the nomenclature of the individual Dashas are in terms of 'Nava-Tara' cycle - as Janma Dasha, Sampat Dasha, Vipat Dasha, etc respectively. … In the natural cycle of this Dasha-system, every one of the 9 successive Dashas are ruled by the corresponding 9 planets taken in Vimshottari order – but with the distinction that it begins from Sun (which corresponds to it's Janma Dasha).

[ *N.B.: It should be noted that the (Jaimini) *Tara Dasha – which is alternately termed as Nakshatra Dasha – is entirely different from this particular Dasha-system. In (Jaimini) *Tara Dasha, the commencing Dasha is of the sign where the "Tara Lagna" falls; it's 12 Dashas are of equal-duration of 9 years each and the full-cycle is 108 years . ]

Condition for Applicability of Tara Dasha:

Among the 9 planets (from Sun to Ketu), if at least one planet is situated in an angular house (kendra) – that is, in Ascendant and/ or in 4th and/ or in 7th and/ or in 10th – then Tara Dasha will be applicable in the chart .

    Finding the Commencing Tara Dasha:

(1). If three or more planets are situated in the angular house/s, then the strongest planet among those will correspond to the commencing Dasha.

    (2). Else, If two planets are situated in one or more angular houses, then the stronger between the two planets will correspond to the commencing Dasha;

(3). Else, If only a single planet is situated in an angular house, then that particular planet will correspond to the commencing Dasha.

If the Strongest/ Stronger/ Only Commencing Dasha Corresponding Duration:

Planet in Kendra is will be of in years
    Sun Janma Dasha 6 years
    Moon Sampat Dasha 10 years
    Mars Vipat Dasha 7 years
    Rahu Kshema Dasha 18 years
    Jupiter Pratyari Dasha 16 years
    Saturn Sadhaka Dasha 19 years
    Mercury Naidhava Dasha 17 years
    Ketu Mitra Dasha 7 years
    Venus Param-Mitra Dasha 20 years
    Full Cycle = 120 years

Finding the Balance of Tara Dasha at Birth:

Unlike Vimshottari Dasha-system, the Nakshatra occupied by the Moon is not invariably based upon in the Tara Dasha-system – unless Moon occupies an angular (kendra) position from the Ascendant, and in case if two or more planets are situated in one or more angular house/s, then if Moon is the stronger or the strongest among the planets. In most cases (8 in 9, or 88.89% cases), the nakshatra occupied by some other planet is taken (which varies from chart to chart; and the lord of that nakshatra is of no importance in this system. The nakshatra is considered only for finding it's portion yet to be traversed – for the purpose of finding the Balance of Tara Dasha at Birth.

The planet - which corresponds to the Commencing Tara Dasha – must be situated anywhere in any one of the 27 Nakshatras – in which the planet may have progressed to some extent, and the remaining part of the Nakshatra is lying yet to be traversed. So, the portion of the Nakshatra – which is yet to be traversed is to be found:

The Span of Nakshatra yet to be traversed by the planet = [ (Nakshata No. occupied by the Planet) * (40 / 3 ) – Longitude of the Planet ]

MF = The Proportion of Nakshatra yet to be traversed by the planet = (The Span of Nakshatra yet to be traversed by the planet) / ( 40 / 3 )

The Balance of Tara Dasha at Birth = MF * (Full duration of the corresponding Dasha period)

For making the comprehension clear, let us consider an example chart.

    Example-1 : Male person; D.O.B. - 13/ 06/ 1954; T.O.B. : 10-13 a.m.; P.O.B. : Calcutta (West Bengal). Leo - Ascendant; Libra - Neptune (R), Saturn (R) & Moon; Sagittarius - Mars (R) & Rahu; Taurus - Sun; Gemini - Jupiter, Mercury, Ketu & Uranus; Cancer - Venus & Pluto; Capricorn - Chiron.

In this chart, only one planet Sun is situated in an angular house – the 10th. The longitude of Sun is 58*25'40".

The planet Sun corresponds to "Janma Dasha" – as per the Tara Dasha set-up. So, the commencing Dasha will be that of Janma Dasha – whose Balance of Dasha at Birth is to be found out.

Sun's longitude is 58*25'40". It is situated in Mrigashira (# 5) Nakshatra – but we have mentioned earlier that neither the particular nakshatra nor it's lord is of any importantance in this system. We have only to find out how much portion of the nakshatra is still lying to be traversed.

    The ending point of the Nakshatra occupied by the 'planet' = 5 * ( 13*20' ) = 66*40'00".

    The Span of Nakshatra yet to be traversed = 66*40'00" – 58*25'40" = 8*14'20".

MF = The Proportion of Nakshatra yet to be traversed by the planet = 8*14'20" / 13*20' = 0.6179166.

    The Balance of Tara Dasha at Birth = 0.6179166 * 6 years = 3.7075 years = 3 y 8 m 15 d of Janma Dasha.

As such, the cycle of Tara Dasha for this particular person will be as under:

SL. List of Tara Dashas Duration From - To
    1 Janma Dasha 3 y. 8 m. 15 d. / 06/ 1954 to 28/ 02/ 1958
    2 Sampat Dasha 10 years 28/ 02/ 1958 to 28/ 02/ 1968
    3 Vipat Dasha 7 years 28/ 02/ 1968 to 28/ 02/ 1975
    4 Kshema Dasha 18 years 28/ 02/ 1975 to 28/ 02/ 1993
    5 Pratyari Dasha 16 years 28/ 02/ 1993 to 28/ 02/ 2009
6 Sadhaka Dasha 19 years and so on....
    7 Naidhava Dasha 17 years
    8 Mitra Dasha 7 years
    9 Param-Mitra Dasha 20 years
    Full Cycle = 120 years

Finding the Divisions and Sub-divisions of Tara Dasha:

Tara Dasha is very closely similar to Vimshottari Dasha-system. Only the names of Dashas are different – whereas the duration of the individual Dashas and their sequence of succession are exactly the same as those of Vimshottari Dasha. As such, as per the natural cycle, the Bhuktis are to be found in the same proportion and order – the first Bhukti being the same as that of Dasha. The very same applies in case of Antara also; as per the natural cycle, the Antaras are to be found in the same manner – the first Antara being the same as that of Bhukti.

Some observations in respect of Tara Dasha:

In case of Tara Dasha, sometime around the ending of a Dasha/ onset of the next Dasha, some important events and happenings are likely to take place. In the Natural cycle of this Dasha-system, 3 Dashas – the Vipat Dasha, the Pratyari Dasha, and the Naidhava Dasha – are in general the unfavorable periods. … And, during the combined period when the Dasha is unfavorable and the Bhukti is also unfavorable, some quite unfavorable happenings are expected.

Similarly, in the Natural cycle of this Dasha-system, 3 Dashas – the Sampat Dasha, the Kshema Dasha, and the Sadhaka Dasha – are in general the favorable periods. … The onset of these Dashas bring in auspicious events/ happenings. And, during the combined period when the Dasha is favorable and the Bhukti is also favorable, some really favorable happenings are expected.

Sampat Dasha commenced on 28/ 02/ 1958 (when the native was aged less than 4). His parents (together with him) migrated to a different city – where his father started a new business (it was before "Vaishakhi" or mid-April, 1958), and had been doing quite well in that business for a number of years.

Kshema Dasha commenced on 28/ 02/ 1975 (when the native was aged less than 21). The native migrated to a different city; he secured a fairly lucrative employment in an internationally reputed big organization. It may not be construed as a mere coincidence that his joining in first service was on: 01/ 03/ 1975***.

The Bhuktis in the unfavorable Vipat Dasha – which ran for 7 years (from 28/ 02/ 1968 to 28/ 02/ 1975):

SL. Tara Dasha-Bhuktis Duration From - To
    1 Vipat-Vipat 0 y. 4 m. 27 d. 28/ 02/ 1968 to 25/ 07/ 1968
    2 Vipat-Kshema 1 y. 0 m. 18 d. 25/ 07/ 1968 to 13/ 08/ 1969
    3 Vipat-Pratyari 0 y. 11 m. 6 d. 13/ 08/ 1969 to 19/ 07/ 1970
    4 Vipat-Sadhaka 1 y. 1 m. 9 d. 19/ 07/ 1970 to 08/ 09/ 1971
    5 Vipat-Naidhava 0 y. 11 m. 27 d. 08/ 09/ 1971 to 05/ 09/ 1972
    6 Vipat-Mitra 0 y. 4 m. 27 d. and so on...
    7 Vipat-ParamMitra 1 y. 2 m. 0 d.
    8 Vipat-Janma 0 y. 4 m. 6 d.
    9 Vipat-Sampat 0 y. 7 m. 0 d.
Duration of Vipat Dasha = 7 years

Now let us check the actual happenings – as some unfavorable results were quite expected during:

    1. Vipat Bhukti in Vipat Dasha : from 28/ 02/ 1968 to 25/ 07/ 1968 . … The native could not remember if anything serious had happened during this period. But there had been a theft at residence sometime approximately around ending of 1967 or starting of 1968 . There had also been another unsuccessful attempt of theft only a few days after the incident.

    2. Pratyari Bhukti in Vipat Dasha : from 13/ 08/ 1969 to 19/ 07/ 1970 . … The native had been bed-ridden at his residence, and was undergoing medical treatment for about 2 – 3 weeks. The treatment was proved to be "wrong", and he had to be rushed to an expensive nursing home – where he received treatment for about a month or so (in June, 1970 ).

3.Naidhava Bhukti in Vipat Dasha : 08/ 09/ 1971 to 05/ 09/ 1972. … The native's father faced a serious setback in profession in August, 1971 – from which he could never be able to recover. Besides, the native's younger co-born had been sick and was treated in hospitals for long from April, 1972 – signs of recovery were seen from September-October, 1972.

  • A Brief Introduction To 'NADI' Astrology

It is very natural that Nadi Literatures immensely attract the attention and interest of any advanced student of the sacred subject of Astrology, and of any serious researcher in the field. There are more than 24 "Nadi Granthas" available in various parts of South India; most of these have still been lying in the form of palm-leaf bundles written in Sanskrit language, but have been scribed by using the scripts of regional languages (like Tamil) of South India. These are chiefly the property of their respective owners, and many of these are available in big libraries. In North India, the Nadi Granthas are more popularly known as "Samhitas" .

Even some educated and accomplished persons are of the opinion that the predictions obtained from the "Nadi Readings" about possible future happenings almost invariably prove to be wrong - although the readings in respect of past events appear to be amazingly accurate (and therefore the querent gets duly impressed). But this not at all a balanced view; often it is observed that people acquire lopsided views owing to their personal bad experiences, or by believing what they might have listened from people whom they respect and/ or trust. One should arrive at conclusions after gathering sufficient knowledge and information about the subject, and after judiciously considering all the pros and cons.

It is however true that many learned Astrologers have had cautioned us that there are a number of fake or spurious works available on the subject , and these imitations are heavily banked upon by some cunning habitual deceivers - most of whom possess little or no knowledge of Astrology. It should be noted that there are two different classes of Nadis: (1). Mantra Nadis., and (2). Tantra Nadis. While the latter class of Granthas (Tantra Nadis) is essentially based on age-old well-known Astrological principles - and hence merits the attention of Astrology lovers, the former class of Granthas (Mantra Nadis) is basically 'dangerous' .

Mantra Nadis are based on acquiring control over some "uchchista" or 'kshudra' (mean or profane) deities by using the Mantras. From these Nadis, the querent obtains very accurate reading of all the major events and happenings of the past, but most of the (or even all the) predictions about the future that are given normally prove to be false when the predicted time of fructification actually arrives.

For information of the more inquisitive users, the names of the various available Nadi Granthas are given hereunder:

    1. Bhrigu Nadi., 2. Shukra Nadi., 3. Dhruva Nadi*., 4. Satya Nadi., 5. Surya Nadi., 6. Agastya Nadi., 7. Guru Nadi., 8. Nandi Nadi., 9. Budha Nadi., 10. Chandra Kala Nadi (Deva Keralam)., 11. Koumara Nadi., 12. Ishwara Nadi., 13. Sapta Rishi Nadi., 14. Kuja Nadi., 15. Kaka Bhujandar Nadi., 16. Kapila Nadi., 17. Bhargava Nadi., 18. Shani Nadi., 19. Nava Nadi., 20. Garga Nadi (more popularly known as Garga Samhita)., 21. Narada Nadi., 22. Markandeya Nadi., 23. Koushika Nadi., 24. Saraswati Nadi., etc.

    * There are two different "Dhruva Nadis": one is by Satyacharya, and the other is by Jaya Muni. A very important noteworthy point is that "Dhruva Nadi" has been compiled on "SAYANA" basis - while the other Nadis like Satya Nadi (or Satya Samhita) has been compiled on usual "NIRAYANA" basis.

Certain Nadi Granthas like "Satya Nadi" (alternately known as Satya Samhita) generally deal with the lives of the great, outstanding, and illustrious persons of various fields. Whereas "Dhruva Nadi" covers the lives of all kinds of persons hailing form various walks of life.

There are basically 2 types of Nadi Granthas :

(1). The former kind deals with the actual horoscopes obtained by means of various possible permutations and combinations. "Bhrigu Samhita" is an example of this type; it is available in Hindi also. This kind of Nadi Granthas is of great interest to the serious students of Astrology.

(2). The latter kind uses certain starting points - known by the term Nadi-Amsha (which are actually 150 unequal divisions of any sign) - and go on discussing the possible events and happenings at length by taking the commencing point as effective "Ascendant". "Deva Keralam" (Chandra Kala Nadi) is such a book (available in English* also). There are many other Nadi Granthas of this category; like Dhruva Nadi, Bhrigu Nadi, Guru Nadi, Kuja Nadi, etc; but all these Granthas are not easily available.

[ * N.B.: However, one important thing deserves to be mentioned about the English version of Deva Keralam (Chandra Kala Nadi) translated by (Late) Shri R. Santhanam – which is available in the market. In this work, the 150 Nadi-Amshas had been taken as to be of 'equal' duration (30* / 150 = 0*12' each) – whereas actually the Nadi-Amshas are of unequal durations, and learned Astrologers are well aware of this fact. So, while perusing this work, the interested reader should keep this deviation in his/ her mind – as this ambiguity will surely make a whole lot of difference in the readings. ]

Among all these Nadis, the approach of "Dhruva Nadi" appears to be very systematic, and it is thoroughly consistent - since it is solely based on the widely known and logically justifiable general principles of Astrology. But time and again even the most learned Astrologers have stressed that the unique system of Nadi Granthas is not at all very easy to grasp - unless one has acquired indepth knowledge of almost all the available methods propounded by the great sages Parasara, Jaimini, Bhrigu, etc.

Certain Nadi Granthas like "Sapta Rishi Nadi" do not make any mention of the 150 Nadi-Amshas or their use for the predictive purposes. It takes the longitudes of all the planets and also of the Ascendant. It uses the usual rules of Astrology (of Parasara, etc). This Nadi, however, puts forward the predictions; but it does so without advancing any Astrological reasons in support thereof . As such, although the students can grasp the general principles of Astrology quite well, still at times they become quite at a loss to comprehend the mechanism involved in delineation of results. Another peculiarity of this Nadi Grantha is that most of the horoscopes discussed are of 'male' persons.

N.B.: It may not be totally out of place that some ill-informed people (who also claim themselves to be Astrologers) are trying to pass on predictions based on the so-called 'subs' (or 'sub-subs') of the K. P. System as to be of "Nadi Astrology" (!). Even some Astrology software CDs available in the market also offer such 'predictions' (!). The people should not and must not be misled by such deceptive claims . Neither the 'sub' nor the 'sub-sub' has anything to do with Nadi Astrology. By merely acquiring the knowledge of the K. P. system and the use of the divisions and sub-divisions of Vimshottari Dasha-system only, one can never expect to become capable of comprehending the subtle techniques involved in Nadi Astrology . Anyone will need to study a lot more, and learn much more; he/ she must also posses sharp intelligence, retentive memory, and acquire vast experience. Possessing a very good knowledge in Jaimini system of Astrology will definitely prove to be highly advantageous; even some very learned Astrologers have opined that some kind of special abilities are essential for comprehending Jaimini principles correctly.

"We have been trying to comprehend the incomprehensible", so said Descartes. This is what actually we have been doing so long - through Astrology. To become able to decipher the planetary influences - which are essentially esoteric by nature - one must have a lot of patience and perseverance, and pursue the subject for long with utmost sincerity and true devotion.

[ N.B.: Unless otherwise specifically stated, hereunder, the positions of the planets and Ascendant have been taken on the basis of Nadi-Amsha Chart only (and these have no reference to the Lagna-Kundali). ]

IMPORTANT NOTE: The Nadi-Amshas are very minute divisions. The 30 degrees of every sign is divided into 150 divisions. However, these divisions are unequal ; the span of the smallest Nadi-Amsha is 0*01'40", while the span of the largest Nadi-Amsha is 0*30'00". As such, the Ascendant Nadi-Amsha will last for only about 7 seconds' time while it will cross the smallest Nadi-Amsha, and it will take about 2 minutes' time while it will cross the largest Nadi-Amsha. Hence, it must be duly noted that the Time of Birth must be absolutely accurate; often, the Time of Birth may need a very slight alteration/ adjustment (ahead or behind - by a few seconds minimum to about 2 minutes maximum). The Nadi-Amsha Ascendant will then be shifted to the next or to the previous one, and the chart set-up (and consequently the Jaimini Rashi-Dasha set-up) will then be automatically changed; by doing so, it would be observed that for one particular set-up so obtained, the predictions are becoming amazingly realistic, and falling in line one after another. As the Time of Birth will thus stand "rectified", that particular chart is to be construed as to be the 'true' one for predictive purpose.

  • Important Observations from Kota Chakra

Originally, Kota Chakra was being used for divining the outcome of a war between two warlords – one is the Lord of the Castle and the other is the Invader. Enemy's invasion is similar to raids (attacks!) conducted by punitive authorities, destruction of the castle is quite akin to fall of the ruling government, and the outcome of a dispute or lawsuit – in a way – has some similarities with the outcome of war; thus, Kota Chakra can be effectively used for these purposes – besides finding out the periods of sufferings owing to physical and mental disorders, duration of stressful periods, possibility of recovery, etc.

It should always be borne in mind that Kota Chakra only deals with the nakshatra-position of planets in transit – with reference to the Nakshatra-position occupied by Moon at Birth. As the effects of operating directional influences (Dasha-Bhukti, etc as per popularly used Vimshottari Dasha***; and/ or other Dasha-systems like Kala Chakra Dasha, Yogini Dasha, etc – if the person will well conversant with use of these) are of much more significance than those of transiting planets, erroneous (which might even be ridiculous) conclusions should never be arrived at from the transit considerations only. The effects (favorable or otherwise) can be expected to materialize only when the transit influences are perfectly in agreement with the operating directional influences.

[ ***N.B.: For obtaining the best possible results, the use of 28-Nakshatra-based Dasha-systems are recommended for studying the Kota Chakra. If in somebody's horoscope, Sun is situated in the Ascendant, then Shashti-Hayani Dasha (60 years' full-cycle) is to be used; in other cases, Ashtottari Dasha (108 years' full-cycle) – depending on the method as applicable (Krittikadi- or Aridradi-) should be followed. … However, it is a matter of deep regret that very few people actually know (and great many others are simply not interested to learn) how to use these relatively a-bit-more-complex – yet very interesting – Dasha-systems effectively. … As in these two systems the Dashas are not only of planets (as is in Dashas like Vimshottari), but are of a 'Planet-Nakshatra' combination, the 'Nakshatra' of the operating Dasha (as per Shashti-Hayani or Ashtottari) deserves to be given special importance. ]

Based on 28 Nakshatra-system (including the tiny tot Abhijit), Kota Chakra is a very important and useful tool for ascertaining the timings of possible unfavorable incidents like unexpected developments, untoward happenings, accidental mishaps, ultimate 'great escape' (particularly of violent types: like suicide, unintentional homicide, murder, assassination), etc mainly by studying transit positions of planets and their direction of motion. In certain sensitive Nakshatra-positions (which varies from chart to chart), the entry- and exit- of benefic and malefic planets, their change of direction of motion, and their rate of motion (whether faster or slower than average) are of great significance in delineation of results.

The planets termed as 'Kota-Swami' and 'Kota-Paala' – together with their afflictors (if any) – are of special importance in Kota Chakra. 'Kota-Swami' is the lord of Moon-sign***, and it is the significator of the person's physical body and wellbeing; whereas 'Kota-Paala' is determined as per Moon's Nakshatra-Charan, and it signifies the 'protector' of the person's physical body. At a particular period of time, if both of Kota-Swami and Kota-Paala are found to be weak and/ or afflicted – while some natural malefic planets and/or functional malefic planets are found to be transitting through some sensitive Nakshatra-positions, then quite unfavorable results are signified – according to the characteristics of the afflicting planets.

If a single natural malefic planet (who is a 'maraka' or 'badhaka' or otherwise a functional malefic planet too) afflicts both of the 'Kota-Swami' and the 'Kota-Paala' by conjunction or aspect, then the nakshatra-position of that malefic planet in transit deserves to be given very special importance – since it can be a potential harbinger of unfavorable happenings. But if a single natural benefic planet (who is neither a 'maraka' nor 'badhaka' or otherwise a functional malefic planet) influences both of the 'Kota-Swami' and the 'Kota-Paala' by conjunction or aspect, then the nakshatra-position of that malefic planet in transit also deserves to be given very special importance – since it will be a potential indicator of favorable happenings and even memorable events.

*** N.B.: If in a person's chart, Moon is involved in sign-exchange with a planet, then that planet becomes the 'mukhya' (principal) 'Kota-Swami' – whereas Moon becomes the 'gouna' (secondary) 'Kota-Swami'. In such cases, if a single natural malefic planet (who is a 'maraka' or 'badhaka' or otherwise a functional malefic planet too) afflicts both of these 'Kota-Swamis' (Mukhya and Gouna) by conjunction or aspect, then the nakshatra-position of that malefic planet in transit deserves to be watched with concern – since it can be a potential harbinger of unfavorable happenings.

As usual, the functional natures of the planets are determined from the Birth-chart only – from their respective lordship(s) and d isposition; and the 'maraka' and the 'badhaka' planets are given due consideration. From the Birth-chart, a general assessment about the probable 'longevity' is done first, and the possible nature of events likely to happen around a particular time-period is also found out. … Some astrologers use two Kota Chakras side by side – one showing the Nakshatra-positions of planets in the Birth-chart (which remains the same for life), while the other is for the Nakshatra-positions of planets in transit on a particular day – for which prediction is sought.

The Kota Chakra is variously represented as three concentric squares or rectangles or octagons; out of the three variations, the concentric rectangles are more commonly used. The space enclosed inside the innermost geometric figure is termed as 'Stambha' (it stands for the person's physical body and wellbeing); the space outside the innermost figure and enclosed by the middle geometric figure is termed as 'Madhya'; the space outside the middle figure and enclosed by the outermost geometric figure is termed as 'Prakaara'; and the space outside the outermost geometric figure is termed as 'Bahya'.

The figures are divided into two halves by a vertical straight line (or a pair of straightlines – which indicates 'paths'); these are then further divided into two – and thereby resulting in four quarters – by a horizontal straight line (or a pair of straightlines – as done before). Thereafter, by using two diagonal straight lines (or two pairs of straightlines – as done before) are used for making further divisions. Thus the three concentric geometrical shapes are fragmented into 8 parts.

The 4 diagonal lines (or pairs of lines) are called the 'entry' paths for 7 planets in transit (from Sun to Saturn) and 'exit' paths for 2 nodes (Rahu and Ketu); every one of these paths have three Nakshatras in succession. The 2 vertical lines (or pairs of lines) and the 2 horizontal lines (or pairs of lines) are called the 'exit' paths for 7 planets in transit (from Sun to Saturn) and 'entry' paths for 2 nodes (Rahu and Ketu); every one of these paths have four Nakshatras in succession.

The Nakshatra of the Moon (on the basis of 28 Nakshatra-system) is marked in the top left hand corner – on the outside of the outermost geometric figure. Beginning from the top left hand corner, along the diagonal line – towards inside – three nakshatras are marked in succession. Then next four nakshatras in succession are marked beginning from the innermost geometric figure – towards outside. In clockwise manner, this process is continued in the same manner – by alternately marking three nakshatras beginning from outside and proceeding towards inside, and four nakshatras beginning from inside and proceeding towards outside, in regular succession. Thus the places of 28 Nakshatras are marked.

For health and wellbeing, the 'Stambha' region (i.e., the space covered by the innermost geometric figure) is the most important. It will be seen that 4 different nakshatras – being the 4th, the 11th, the 18th, and the 25th, as reckoned from the Nakshatra occupied by the Moon – are in this region. These 4 naksharas are called the 'Stambhas' (pillars supporting the main structure); when the benefic planets are transitting through any of these four nakshatras, beneficial results are expected, and when the malefic planets are transitting through any of these four nakshatras, it is reasonable to expect that the results will be just the obverse.

The 'Stambha' and the 'Madhya' regions constitute the inner part of the Kota Chakra. Natural and functional benefic planets (when not in retrogression) in this area indicate inherent strength and excellent resistance to withstand adverse influences; natural and functional malefic planets do just the obverse (more so when retrograde). The 'Prakaara' and 'Bahya' regions constitute the outer part of the Kota Chakra – which represents the circumstances and surroundings. Natural and functional malefic planets indicate adverse circumstances (more so when retrograde); but natural and functional benefic planets (when not in retrogression) indicate improved condition.

For serious affection of health (or affliction to the physical body) owing to external influences, the 'Prakaara' region (i.e., the space outside the middle geometric figure and enclosed inside the outermost geometric figure) is the most important. It will be seen that 8 different nakshatras are there; one set of 4 different nakshatras are on the 'entry' paths and another set of 4 different nakshatras are on the 'exit' paths. For the 7 planets (from Sun to Saturn), the 4 Nakshatras on the 'entry' path are – as reckoned from the Nakshatra occupied by the Moon – the 2nd, the 9th, the 16th, and the 23rd respectively, and the 4 Nakshatras on the 'exit' path are the 6th, the 13th, the 20th, and the 27th respectively. As mentioned earlier, the reverse holds good in case of the 2 nodes (Rahu and Ketu), the 'entry' becomes 'exit' and vice versa.

If in some person's Kota Chakra, one or more natural malefic planet(s) – more so if they are functional malefic planet(s) too – transit through any of these 4 nakshatra lying on the 'exit' path of the 'Prakaara' region at a certain point of time, then the planet(s) is/ are become capable of delivering potentially dangerous 'blows' to the person's physical body – which might even prove to be fatal if the person is passing through the Vimshottari Dasha-Bhukti of 'maraka' or 'badhaka' or otherwise adverse planets. … The timing(s) may coincide with the onset of "retrogression" of that particular malefic planet or within a few days from it; it is obvious that such planets can be Mars and Saturn – as Sun can never be retrograde, and the nodes (Rahu and Ketu) are always retrograde.

Similarly, if one or more natural benefic planet(s) – more so if they are functional malefic planet(s) too – transit through any of these 4 nakshatra lying on the 'exit' path of the 'Bahya' region at a certain point of time, then the planet(s) is/ are become capable of delivering potentially dangerous 'blows' to the person's physical body – which might even prove to be fatal if the person is passing through the Vimshottari Dasha-Bhukti of 'maraka' or 'badhaka' or otherwise adverse planets. … The timing(s) may coincide with the onset of "retrogression" of that particular benefic planet or within a few days from it.

If a natural benefic planet becomes a functional malefic for being a trika-lord (i.e., the lord of 8th or 6th or 12th), then also its behavior can prove to be quite tricky when in transit it crosses over one of the 'Bahya' nakshatras – just outside and 'Prakaara'; it could be more so if in transit it conjoins with a dire malefic planet like Mars or Saturn. … However, such a thing can only happen the running Vimsottari Dasha is of a planet – who is a trika-lord (or is placed in a trika-house), the Bhukti is also of a planet – who is a trika-lord (or is placed in a trika-house). … Besides, the dispositors (or the sign-lords) of Rahu or Ketu can behave mischievously – more so when Rahu and/ or Ketu in transit is/ are occupying 'Stambha' nakshatra(s), and the concerned dispositor is close to 'Prakaara' – inside (or in a 'Prakaara' nakshatra) if the dispositor is a natural malefic, or outside (or in a 'Bahya' nakshatra) if the dispositor is a natural benefic.

Commencent of "rerogression" of any planet is always bad. In case of natural malefic planets, it is indicative of accidental mishap, untoward happening, etc; and in case of natural benefic planets, it signifies withdrawal of support or protection. Planets in 'atichara gati' (accelerated motion) also produce unfavorable results; if Mercury in accelerated motion is transitting through a sensitive nakshatra, accidental mishaps may occur resulting from vagaries of nature or stemming from human errors.

If two or more natural malefic planets are transitting over any of the 'Stambha' nakshatras, or at least one natural malefic planet is transitting such a nakshatra – while one or more malefic planets are about to enter, and no natural benefic planet is transitting over any of such nakshatras, the person's defence or resistance becomes very weak. Further, if two or more natural benefic planets are on any of the 'Madhya' nakshatras of the 'exit' path, vulnerability increases further. Additionally if at least one natural malefic planet – which is transitting over any of the 'Prakaara' nakshatras of the 'exit' path – turns retrograde, then the worst possible happening of calamitous type is feared. Such sort of combinations highlighting the predominance of malefic influences are termed as 'Durga Bhanga Yoga' *** (destruction of the castle), and there are many variations of it.

*** In case of (Late) Shri Rajiv Gandhi, on the fateful day (21/ 05/ 1991), two natural malefic planets – Mars and Ketu – were transitting over one of the 'Stambha' nakshatras (Punarvasu); out of the two planets, one was retrograde (Ketu), and no natural benefic planet was transitting over any of the 'Stambha' nakshatras. Two natural benefic planets were on the 'Madhya' nakshatras of the 'exit' path – Jupiter in Pushya, and Mercury in Ashwini. Saturn was transitting over one of the 'Prakaara' nakshatras of the 'exit' path – Shravana. As Saturned turned retrograde on 18/ 05/1991, the dreadful

'Durga Bhanga Yoga' (destruction of the castle) combination became complete. Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on 21/ 05/ 1991.

With great precision and exceptional accuracy, Kota Chakra indicates the 'timings' – which can possibly trigger the event.

We wish to mention about a certain observation. While the Vimshottari Dasha-Bhukti periods of unfavorable planets operate (of Trika-lords, Marakas, or Badhakas), if a natural malefic planet in transit conjoins with the 'Kota'-Swami planet or 'Kota'-Paala planet in either the 3rd or the 22nd nakshatra as reckoned from the Nakshatra occupied by the Moon at birth, the possibility of suffering from serious health-affection increases. It is understandable that these two are unfavorable nakshatras if the reckoning is as per 27 nakshatra-system – since 3rd is Vipat and 22nd is Vainashika. But why should it happen so when the reckoning is as per 28 nakshatra-system (as followed in Kota Chakra) had baffled us since long.

In Kota Chakra, as per tradition, only the 7 Planets (Sun to Saturn) and 2 Lunar nodes (Rahu & Ketu) are considered. In respect of Rahu (and Ketu) it should be noted that their 'mean' positions are taken into account, and these two are considered to be 'always retrograde'. The 'true' positions of Rahu (and Ketu) are not to be used; this is since such positions can at times differ by about 1*45' (max.) – which might alter their Nakshatra-positions, and 'true' Rahu (and Ketu) can at times be 'static' or even in 'direct' motion. Although the transit-positions of Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto could be experimented with, yet no premature conclusion should be arrived at from the positions of these planets in isolation. All sorts of possible events and happenings – including those indicated by the Trans-Saturnine planets – can very well be gleamed from the positions of 9 planets (Sun to Ketu).

Some open-minded students have experimented with the transit-positions of the Trans-Saturnine planets in Kota Chakra – Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Although the results have not been found to be very encouraging, still it has been observed that when Pluto is on the 'entry' path, and is proceeding towards the 'Madhya' region or 'Stambha' region – while it is conjoined with a natural malefic planet, and this too happens in a nakshatra owned by a natural malefic planet, the person's vulnerability increases greatly. In case of (Late) Smt. Indira Gandhi, on the fateful day (31/ 10/ 1984), transit Pluto was on 'entry' path proceeding towards the 'Madhya' region; it was conjoined with Sun (a natural malefic planet) in Nakshatra Aridra (owned by a natural malefic planet, Rahu) – while Rahu (and Ketu) were afflicting two 'Stambha' nakshatras. The exact conjunction of Pluto and Sun was on 25/ 10/ 1984, and Sun had been transitting over this nakshatra (Aridra) from 23/ 10/ 1984 to 05/ 11/ 1984.

The sacred subject of Astrology does not endorse a fatalistic doctrine; it only indicates the prevailing tendencies around a particular time-period. As it is said that being forewarned is almost like being forearmed, the observations from Kota Chakra can be of immense practical usefulness – as the persons can made to become extremely careful and cautious during the indicable vulnerable period(s), and resort to all sorts of preventive and precautionary measures.

It is of interest to note that Kota Chakra has considerable similarities (and differences also) with Kala Chakra – which is used in Horary Astrology (Ref. Prashna Marga, Vol-2, Chapter-XVI). In Kala Chakra, certain nakshatras gain special importance by becoming the significators for Prana, Deha, Mrityu, etc. For the purpose of avoiding a confusing mix-up, we have covered Kala Chakra separately in following.

  • Important Observations From Kala Chakra

Kala Chakra has considerable similarities with Kota Chakra (which we have covered earlier in details). Whereas Kota Chakra is for checking planetary positions in transit, Kala Chakra is for horary or prasna charts – which in other words, is almost synonymous with the transit charts. Both of these two Chakras are based of 28 Nakshatra-system (including the tiny tot Abhijit).

In Kota Chakra, the starting point (the nakshatra of commencement) is 'variable'; it depends on the Janma-Nakshatra (the Nakshatra occupied by the Moon at Birth). But in Kala Chakra, the starting point is 'fixed'; it always commences from the Nakshatra Rohini (Nakshatra No.- 4) and ends with the Nakshatra Krittika (Nakshatra No.- 3).

Besides, another special difference is to be noted. In Kota Chakra, the numbers in the chart directly correspond to nakshatra-positions (as per 28 Nakshatra-system); but in Kala Chakra, this correspondence is indirect – although the order of succession is regular zodiacal as usual – in the same clockwise direction. In Kala Chakra, the indicated numbers are actually the 'serial numbers'; and the 'serial number' of a planet is obtained by adding 25 to the nakshatra number (as per 28 Nakshatra-system) it is occupying, and expunging 28 from it whenever the sum exceeds 28.

In Kota Chakra, the entry paths are along its diagonals – from the edge towards the center; and the exit paths are along the vertical and the horizontal dividers – from the center towards the edge. But in Kala Chakra, the entry paths are along the vertical and the horizontal dividers – edge towards the center; the exit paths are along its diagonals – from the center towards the edge. … In Kota Chakra, the commencement is from the top left hand corner – whereas in Kala Chakra, the commencement is from the middle of the top. In both the cases, it lies on the entry path; and from this, the exit and entry paths follow alternately in the same zodiacal direction.

In Kota Chakra, importance is given to the two planets – who become the 'Kota'-Swami and 'Kota'-Paala; and if Moon has exchanged sign with a planet, then the Moon is also given importance as the 'gouna' (or secondary) 'Kota'-Swami. … But in Kala Chakra, importance is given to the serial numbers (positions) of three nakshatras – of Prana, Deha, and Mrityu. In addition, three similar other positions are also given importance; these are – Mandi, Transit Sun, and the Birth Moon.

Besides, observations from the movement of 'Yogini' and 'Mrityu' in Kala Chakra are considered to be of great importance. The rising points of Yogini vary depending on the Weekdays (Vara) and also the Lunar days (Tithis). If Yogini's aspect falls on the Arudha Lagna (or Horary Ascendant obtained by Random method) or the Janma-Lagna (Birth Ascendant) or the Janma Rashi (Moon), then it is considered very inauspicious, and some unfavorable results are likely to be the outcome.

Kala Chakra is an important tool for ascertaining the prospect of health and wellbeing of a person – for whom the horary (prasna) chart is cast. If the query is of a serious nature and the querent puts the question with sincerity and honest intentions, then the answer obtained in respect of the possible outcome will surely prove to be perfect.

  • Important Observations From SARVATO-BHADRA Chakra

The Sarvato-Bhadra Chakra is a wonderful predictive tool – which has been developed and perfected by the ancient Indian Sages. Down the ages, it had been known, experimented with, and extensively used for divining the possible future outcome in respect of various important matters that concern the people in general greatly. It can be effectively used for identification of personal problems (Natal Astrology), identification of national problems (Mundane Astrology), selecting auspicious Muhurtas (Electional Astrology), answering various Prashnas of serious nature (Horary Astrology), forecasts about the market trends (Commercial Astrology), etc. Curious people's profound interest in this Chakra has ever since been steadily increasing by leaps and bounds.

Like Kota Chakra, the Sarvato-Bhadra Chakra is also based on 28 Nakshatra-system (including the tiny tot Abhijit); but the similarity ends here. Whereas Kota Chakra has a relatively simple structure – consisting of 3 boundaries, 4 regions, 28 nakshatras, 9 planets, and 2 types of paths (entry and exit) only, SBC accommodates a host of Astrological particulars – which no other Chakra contains. In the preliminary stages, anyone might become almost bewildered upon finding that it accommodates 7 Weekdays (in 5 Categories), 15 Tithis (in 5 Classes), 12 Rashis, 28 Nakshatras, 16 Vowels, and 20 Consonants in its main 'body' portion; besides, it also contains 12 Rashis, 108 Navamshas (= 12 * 9), and 112 Nakshatra-Padas (= 28 * 4) in its outer 'border' region.

Apparently, the Sarvato-Bhadra Chakra looks like an extremely complex configuration consisting of too many blocks, and too much of details of Astrological particulars sequentially distributed among those blocks. It is mainly used for delineation of results of Transits of Planets with reference to the 'Birth' horoscopes in case of personal matters, and or installation/ inauguration horoscopes in case of national matters, etc. It should be duly noted that very dependable information on various aspects of life could be effectively divined from it.

This Chakra mainly consists of two regions – one is the main 'body' region, and the other is the 'border' region. The 'border' part actually consists of 4 segments – and these are but the extensions of the main body in four directions: East portion is above the top, South portion on the right side, West is below the bottom, and North is on the left. … It should be observed that the indicated directions are not marked as per the directions attributed in geographical maps (where the top always points at the North) – although the sequence of the directions remains the very same in both the cases (in clockwise manner, North > East > South > West).

The problem of selecting the consonant correctly:

As in Sarbato-Bhadra Chakra, only 20 consonants are used (where the first one 'A' is rather a vowel), selecting the appropriate consonant many a times proves to be a rather difficult task – as in many Indian languages (like Hindi, Bengali, etc), the actual number of consonants is twice of this figure (The number of letters = 56; our alphabet consists of 16 Vowels and 40 Consonants).

The Consonant corresponding to the person will be picked up from the first letter of the person's first name. If the person has more then one names, then that name by which the person is most popularly known should be used. If the first letter of the name is a compound letter (as in the name 'Kshitish'), then the nearest sounding letter should be taken (as 'Kha' is to be used in case of 'Kshitish'). In case of the name 'Gyani' (which should rather be spelt as 'Gnani'), the spelling of the first letter is the compound letter is 'Gna' (= Ja + Na); but as its first part is pronounced more akin to 'Ga', it is to be taken (serial no. 52). As we are concerned more with the pronunciation sound rather than the spelling (as written in languages of non-Indian origin), due care should be exercised while selecting the appropriate consonant.

Thus, in case of the names like Cyril or Cecil, the corresponding consonant will be 'Sa' (serial no. 53) – as these names are pronounced quite similar to Siril or Sisil; but in case of Charles or Chandan, the corresponding consonant will be 'Cha' (serial no. 55). In case of names like Dilip or David, there is difference between the two D's – as in Hindi, Bengali, etc Indian languages, the former belongs to the 3rd row of consonants, while the latter belongs to the 4th row of consonants. But in SBC, owing to want of choice, no distinction will be made between the two; and 'Da' (serial no. 38) will be chosen for both. For the same reason, in case of names like Chinmoy (Ch = first letter of the 2nd row) and Chhatrapati (Chh = second letter of the 2nd row), the corresponding consonant will be 'Cha' (serial no. 55) due to want of choice.

The Main 'Body' region of SBC:

A big square is to be drawn first – having sides of 9 units (say, 9 cms) length. Then a set of 8 equidistant parallel straight lines are drawn vertically (i.e., 1 unit apart from the left side towards inside of the big square); thereafter a similar set of 8 equidistant parallel straight lines are drawn horizontally (i.e., 1 unit apart from the top side towards inside of the big square). Thus, a mesh will be obtained; the big square will now consist of 81 small squares.

These 81 small squares will initially be numbered according to a sequential pattern for the purpose of the identification of the location of every specific small square. … Later, these numbers will be removed when the required Astrological particulars will be filled in the individual squares; this is since once the Astrological particulars are filled in their proper places, the serial numbers will lose their significance.

Beginning from the top left hand corner, the Serial Numbers of the small squares (from left to right) will be as under:

    Top or 1st Row: 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09

    2nd Row: 32 33 34 35 36 37 38 39 10

    3rd Row: 31 56 57 58 59 60 61 40 11

    4th Row: 30 55 72 73 74 75 62 41 12

    5th Row: 29 54 71 80 81 76 63 42 13

    6th Row: 28 53 70 79 78 77 64 43 14

  • Viewing from Surya-Siddhanta Yoga Periods & Sub-Periods

This experimental method offers reliable timing of events by using Raman's Ayanamsha only. So, the individual Longitudes of Sun and Moon are to be taken accordingly – before finding the longitude of the Surya-Siddhanta Yoga point.

Raman Sun Longi = Expunger360 [ Sayana Sun Longi – Raman Ayanamsha Value (DOB, TOB)) ] and

Raman Moon Longi = Expunger360 [ Sayana Moon Longi – Raman Ayanamsha Value (DOB, TOB)) ] and

Raman Surya-Siddhanta Yoga Point = Expunger360 (Raman Sun Longi + Raman Moon Longi)

This point can be taken as to the 'effective' position for Calculating the Balance of SS-Yoga period. … It is quite similar to finding the Balance of Dasha at Birth (which is done from the Moon Longi) – but with the below-mentioned certain specific differences:

There are 27 SS Yogas in cyclic order. The full-duration of every yoga is the same = 13 years 4 months (or 40 / 3 years). … Of which, for the first SS Yoga-period, the 'Balance' will be calculated. Every successive SS Yoga-period will be of full-duration (= 13 years 4 months).

Finding the Durations & Succession of SS Yoga-periods:

In case of "MALE" person, the 'Balance-portion' of SS Yoga-period will be calculated, and thereafter the other SS Yoga periods will follow in regular succession (SS Yoga as per Yoga-point, then + 1 , then + 2 , etc), and every successive SS Yoga-period will run for the same duration (= 13 years 4 months).

But in case of "FEMALE" person, the 'Expired portion' of SS Yoga-period will be calculated , and thereafter the other SS Yoga periods will follow in opposite of normal (SS Yoga as per Yoga-point, then – 1 , then – 2 , etc), and every successive SS Yoga-period will run for the same duration (= 13 years 4 months).

    'Expired portion' of SS Yoga-period = ( 13 y 4 m ) – 'Balance-portion' of SS Yoga-period

Finding the Durations & Succession of SS Yoga Sub-periods:

    There are 27 equal-duration SS Yoga Sub-period in any SS Yoga-period. So, the duration of every SS Yoga Sub-period = ( 13 y 4 m ) / 27 … that is, = 40 / 81 year. ... The duration is of about 180 days.

If we opt for further sub-division, then the Inter-periods can be calculated by following the same process. So, the duration of every SS Yoga Inter-period = ( 13 y 4 m ) / ( 27 * 27 ). The duration is of about 7 days only .

Once the order of succession of Main SS Yoga-periods are found, then the Sub-periods are found as usual – beginning from the Main-period as per the same set-up as obtained . … In the original set up, it goes in order of ( X, X + 1, X + 2, etc) for "MALE" persons, and in order of ( X, X – 1, X – 2, etc) for "FEMALE" persons.

Once the set-up of the major SS Yoga periods are found (which differs depending on whether the person is male or female), no further reversal is necessary; the succession of the SS Yoga Sub-periods will be as per the 'set-up' only.

As for predictive purposes, as we opt for avoiding the early age-period (till about 16 years or so), the divisions of the Starting SS Yoga-period will not be necessary at all (as it will always be <= 13 y 4 m).

    Favorable & Unfavorable SS Yogas:

Like the Nakshatras (as per 27 Nakshatra-system), starting from 0* to 360* there are 27 SS Yogas of 13*20' each. The Serial No. of SS Yoga is determined as per SS Yoga Longi (Here, it is by using Raman's Ayanamsha).

    Unfavorable SS Yogas (Naisargika):

There are 9 SS Yogas – which are considered Unfavorable. Their Numbers are:

    # 1 (Vishkumbha), # 6 (Atiganda), # 9 (Shoola), # 10 (Ganda), # 13 (Vyaghata), # 15 (Vajra), # 17 (Vyatipata), # 19 (Parigha), and # 27 (Vaidhriti).

The remaining other 18 SS Yogas are considered Favorable SS Yogas (Naisargika) .

    Unfavorable SS Yogas (Tatkalika):

There are 9 SS Yogas – which are considered Unfavorable (Tatkalika). As per the corresponding set-up their Numbers will be:

    If Starting SS Yoga-period = X Then

    (X + 2), (X + 4), (X + 6), and

    (X + 11), (X + 13), (X + 15), and

    (X + 20), (X + 22), (X + 24). … [ Expunger27 is to be used everywhere ]

If instead of set-up, the standard list of SS Yoga periods are referred to, then the above-mentioned figures are for 'male' persons only. … The figures for 'female' persons will be obtained by substituting '+' by '–'.

For SS Yoga Sub-periods also, the Favorable & Unfavorable – as per Naisargika & Tatkalika – are exactly the same.

Condition-1: If as per both the considerations - Naisargika & Tatkalika - the SS Yoga-period is found to be favorable , and the SS Yoga Sub-period is also found to be so, then

Conclusion-1: As per both the considerations - Naisargika & Tatkalika - the SS Yoga-period is found to be favorable, and the SS Yoga Sub-period is also found to be so. As such the period is likely to be highly beneficial and enjoyable time for you. During this period, some of your cherished desire will be fulfilled, and you may have some special accomplishment; besides, there could be an auspicious celebration in your family. You credibility and honor will also increase.... The possibility of favorable happening might become even more during the period when the operating SS Yoga Inter-period (of about 7 days) will also be found to be favorable.

Condition-2: If as per both the considerations - Naisargika & Tatkalika - the SS Yoga-period is found to be unfavorable , and the SS Yoga Sub-period is also found to be so, then

Conclusion-2: As per both the considerations - Naisargika & Tatkalika - the SS Yoga-period is found to be unfavorable, and the SS Yoga Sub-period is also found to be so. As such the time-period may prove to be quite problematic for you in more ways than one; you may even have to face a very critical situation. Your state of health might become deteriorated, or the well being of one of your close relations may cause you some concern; alternately, you may face a setback owing to some unexpected developments or untoward happening. ... The possibility of unfavorable happening might become even more during the period when the operating SS Yoga Inter-period (of about 7 days) will also be found to be unfavorable.

  • Similarities and Differences among the various "Classes" of Jaimini Rashi-Dashas

    (1) Chara Dasha Class :

Jaimini Chara Dasha (JCD) and Jaimini Trikona Dasha (JTD) belong to this class.

In case of Jaimini Chara Dasha (JCD), as per the method* of Raghava Bhatta & Nrisimha Suri (RB-NS method), the commencing Rashi-Dasha becomes different depending on the 'gender' of the native :

    (a) For 'male' persons, the commencing Rashi-Dasha is always of the Ascendant-sign.

    (b) For 'female' persons, there are two options :

    (i) if the Ascendant-sign is "odd", then the commencement is from the 4th-sign as reckoned from the Ascendant-sign. But,

(ii) if the Ascendant-sign is "even", then the commencement is from the 10th-sign as reckoned from the Ascendant-sign.

In case of Jaimini Trikona Dasha (JTD), as per the method of Raghava Bhatta & Nrisimha Suri (RB-NS method), the strongest sign among the Ascendant, the 5th from it, and the 9th from it. Then the commencing Rashi-Dasha becomes different depending on the 'gender' of the native :

    (a) For 'male' persons, the commencing Rashi-Dasha is always of the strongest sign (among the three signs - as mentioned above).

    (b) For 'female' persons, there are two options :

    (i) if the Ascendant-sign is "odd", then the commencement is from the 4th-sign as reckoned from the strongest sign (among the three signs - as mentioned above). But,

(ii) if the Ascendant-sign is "even", then the commencement is from the 10th-sign as reckoned from strongest sign (among the three signs - as mentioned above).

It can thus be seen that if the Ascendant-sign becomes the strongest sign (among the three signs - as mentioned above), then Jaimini Chara Dasha (JCD) and Jaimini Trikona Dasha (JTD) will become exactly identical.

However, in most cases (roughly 2 cases out of 3, or about 67%), these two will be different. In such cases, Jaimini Trikona Dasha (JTD) will be different from Jaimini Chara Dasha (JCD). For timing of some auspicious events like marriage and childbirth, Trikona Dasha (JTD) often offers better results than Chara Dasha (JCD) - this has been observed to be more so in case of 'female' persons.

[ SPECIAL NOTE : There is another method - known as Neelkantha's method* for reckoning of Jaimini Chara Dasha; It is based on Oja-pada/ Visama-pada signs, and in this system the set-up of the Dashas and their durations become different. In this method, the divisions and sub-divisions are also different. But as for the purpose of narrow-range 'timing of events', this method has not been found to be at all dependable, I have deliberately avoided any discussion about this particular method , and it's use for 'timing of events'. ]

    The Duration of Dashas :

The duration of Dashas in both Jaimini Chara Dasha (JCD) and Jaimini Trikona Dasha are reckoned in the same way. The durations are variable, and are dependent on the placement of the sign-lord with reference to the sign. Excepting the two special cases mentioned in following - as per Cond (i) and (ii), the duration depends on the count from the sign-lord to the sign - as per Cond (iii) (a) and (b). The mode of counting however varies depending upon whether the lord of the Dasha-sign is situated in an "odd" sign or "even" sign :

    (i) If the sign-lord is situated in own-sign in that very sign itself , then the Dasha-duration of the sign is 12 years., Else,

(ii) If the sign-lord is situated in the opposite sign (that is, in the 7th from it), then the Dasha- duration of the sign is 10 years., Else,

(iii) It will be dependent on the sign-count from the placement of the sign-lord to the sign :

    (a) If the sign-lord is situated in an "odd" sign, then the signCount will be in "zodiacal" order - from the sign-lord to the sign, and the duration of the Dasha will be = (SignCount - 1) year/s. But,

    (b) If the sign-lord is situated in an "even" sign, then the SignCount will be in "reversed" order - from the sign-lord to the sign, and the duration of the Dasha will be = (SignCount - 1) year/s.

Thus, the durations of any sign in either of these two Dasha-systems can range from 1 year (minimum) to 12 years (maximum).

    AN "ALTERNATE" METHOD OF J.C.D. DIVISIONS & SUB-DIVISIONS :

For Jaimini Chara Dasha, there is another interesting method of divisions and sub-divisions. In this method, the Dasha duration is first divided into 3 equal parts - in terms of "Drekkanas" of the sign. These divisions may be termed as CD (as C in English is the 3rd letter). Each of these divisions may further be divided into 10 equal parts - in terms of "Dashamamsha" of the sign. These divisions may be termed as XD (as X in Roman = 10). Each of these divisions may further be divided into 12 equal parts - in terms of "Dwadashamsha" of the sign. These divisions may be termed as LD (as L in English is the 12th letter). ... Thus, every Dasha will be subdivided into 3 * 10 * 12 = 360 equal divisions.

As the duration of a JCD can be from 1 year (minimum) to 12 years (maximum), the minute sub-divisions in this method will be from 1 day (minimum) to 12 days (maximum). This will be the "unit" for timing of events. If someone gains some experience for finding "inter-relationships" between the MDS (Main Dasha sign), CDS (Drekkana sign), XDS (Dashamamsha sign), LDS (Dwadashamsa sign).

Drekkana divisions of Signs (CDS) : There will be 3 equal divisions. The first part is the sign itself, then the second part is the 5th sign from it, then the third part is the 9th sign from it. The order of succession will be in usual "zodiacal" order.

Dashamamsha divisions of Signs (XDS) : If the Drekkana Sign (CDS) is "odd", then the 10 equal divisions will commence from the CDS. But if the Drekkana Sign (CDS) is "even", then the 10 divisions will commence from the 9th sign from the CDS. The order of succession will be in usual "zodiacal" order.

Dwadashamsha divisions of Signs (LDS) the 12 equal divisions will commence from the XDS. The order of in succession is usual "zodiacal" order.

    (2) Sthira Dasha Classes :

    (2). (a). Main Class:

Jaimini Sthira Dasha (JSD) and Brahma Graha Dasha (BGD) belong to this class.

In case of Jaimini Sthira Dasha (JSD) also, the commencing Rashi-Dasha becomes different depending on the 'gender' of the native :

    (a) For 'male' persons, the commencing Rashi-Dasha is always of the "stronger" sign between the Ascendant-sign and the 7th from it.

    (b) For 'female' persons, there are two options :

    (i) if the Ascendant-sign is "odd", then the commencement is from the "stronger" sign between the and the 4th and the 7th from the Ascendant-sign. But,

(ii) if the Ascendant-sign is "even", then the commencement is from the "stronger" sign between the and the 10th and the 7th from the Ascendant-sign.

In case of Brahma Graha Dasha, it commences from the sign occupied by the Brahma-Graha* (Upon fulfilling certain specific conditions, a particular planet becomes the Brahma-Graha in a particular chart).

Now, Brahma-Graha planet might be situated in any sign - including the "stronger" sign between the Ascendant and the 7th from it. As such, in some cases (approximately 1 in 12, or 8.33%), Sthira Dasha and Brahma Graha Dasha will become identical. But in most cases, these two Dasha set-ups will be different.

    The Duration of Dashas :

These are the same as in Mandooka Dasha (and Trikuta Dasha), here the durations are "fixed" - depending on the constitutional nature of the signs :

    (i) If the sign is Chara (movable), then the Dasha-duration of the sign is 7 years.,

(ii) If the sign is Sthira (fixed), then the Dasha-duration of the sign is 8 years., and

(iii) If the sign is Ubhaya (common), then the Dasha-duration of the sign is 9 years.

  • The Order of Succession in Jaimini Sthira Dasha and Brahma Graha Dasha

    (i) In case of 'male' natives, commencing from the stronger sign, it proceeds in regular succession in "zodiacal" order if the commencing sign is "odd"; it proceeds in regular succession in "reversed" order if the commencing sign is "even". And,

(ii) In case of 'female' natives, commencing from the stronger sign, it proceeds in regular succession in "reversed" order if the commencing sign is "odd"; it proceeds in regular succession in "zodiacal" order if the commencing sign is "even".

Special usefulness of Jaimini Sthira Dasha and Brahma Graha Dasha :

Sthira Dasha is probably the very best of all Jaimini Dasha-systems for finding information about health and disease, possibility of accidental mishaps, longevity (of self, and also of close relatives like those of parents, spouse, etc), and the like. But when these two Dasha set-ups are different, Brahma Graha Dasha becomes a relatively better indicator for possible unfavorable happenings of more serious sort - like possibility of getting into disputes with the punitive authorities, or troubles from hardcore criminals or sworn enemies, etc.

    (2). (b). Auxiliary Class:

Jaimini Mandooka Dasha and Jaimini Trikuta Dasha belong to this class.

In case of Mandooka Dasha, the commencing Rashi-Dasha is of the "strongest" sign among the Ascendant, the 5th from it, and the 9th from it.

In case of Trikuta Dasha, the commencing Rashi-Dasha is of the "stronger" sign between the Ascendant and the 7th from it.

But in both the cases, the order of succession varies - depending on the 'gender' of the native :

*** SPECIAL NOTE : If between the two trinal signs (the 5th, and the 9th), only one sign is occupied by one or more planet/s, whereas the other sign remains unoccupied by any planet, then Mandooka Dasha will offer more dependable results. And,

If each of the two signs of a pair of opposite signs (Ascendant & the 7th, or the 2nd & the 8th, or the 3rd & the 9th, etc), are occupied by one or more planet/s, then Trikuta Dasha will offer more dependable results.

In case of Jaimini Mandooka Dasha :

    (i) In case of 'male' natives, commencing from the stronger sign, it proceeds to the "trines" in "zodiacal" order; like (1st*, 5th, 9th), then (2nd, 6th, 10th), then (3rd, 7th, 11th), then (4th, 8th, 12th). ... Here, the 1st does not necessarily mean the Ascendant; rather it is the "stronger" sign between the Ascendant and the 7th from it. And,

(ii) In case of 'female' natives, commencing from the stronger sign, it proceeds to "trines" in "reversed" order; like (1st*, 9th, 5th), then (12th, 8th, 4th), then (11th, 7th, 3rd), then (12th, 8th, 4th). ... Here also, the 1st does not necessarily mean the Ascendant; rather it is the "stronger" sign between the Ascendant and the 7th from it.

In case of Jaimini Trikuta Dasha :

    (i) In case of 'male' natives, commencing from the stronger sign, it proceeds to the "opposites" in "zodiacal" order - in a similar manner like Sthira Dasha; like (1st*, 7th), then (2nd, 8th), then (3rd, 9th), then (4th, 10th), then (5th, 11th), then (6th, 12th). ... Here, the 1st does not necessarily mean the Ascendant; rather it is the "stronger" sign between the Ascendant and the 7th from it. And,

(ii) In case of 'female' natives, commencing from the stronger sign, it proceeds to the "opposites" in "reversed" order - in a similar manner like Sthira Dasha; like (1st*, 7th), then (12th, 6th), then (11th, 5th), then (10th, 4th), then (9th, 3rd), then (8th, 2nd). ... Here also, the 1st does not necessarily mean the Ascendant; rather it is the "stronger" sign between the Ascendant and the 7th from it.

Thus, it is quite obvious that Trikuta Dasha is merely a "re-arranged" form of Mandooka Dasha.

    The Duration of Dashas :

These are the same as in Sthira Dasha (and in Brahma Graha Dasha), here the durations are "fixed" - depending on the constitutional nature of the signs :

    (i) If the sign is Chara (movable), then the Dasha-duration of the sign is 7 years.,

(ii) If the sign is Sthira (fixed), then the Dasha-duration of the sign is 8 years., and

(iii) If the sign is Ubhaya (common), then the Dasha-duration of the sign is 9 years.

Special Role of the "Hara"* Planet :

The "Hara"* planet plays a very important role in delineation of results in Mandooka Dasha and Trikuta Dasha (Upon fulfilling certain specific conditions, a particular planet becomes the "Hara"* planet in a particular chart). It is considered for it's potential harmful effects.

The Dasha/ Bhukti periods - as per Mandooka Dasha and Trikuta Dasha - of the sign in which the "Hara"* planet is placed may and can bring in serious problems and extreme difficulties. It might be more so if the Dasha is of the sign where the "Hara"* planet is situated - whereas the Bhukti is of the sign of the 8th-house, or if the Bhukti is of the sign where the "Hara"* planet is situated - whereas the Dasha is of the sign of the 8th-house. However, this combination does not invariably operate in all the charts - as some of the signs will not have their Bhukti-periods in a particular Dasha (All the Dashas of the Sthira Dasha class can have 7 or 8 or 9 Bhuktis only).

If the 8th house-sign bears some out-of-ordinary affliction in any horoscope, then the Mandooka Dasha or Trikuta Dasha of the 8th house-sign can prove to be an extremely problematic period in a person's life. During such periods, the natives suffer from some unexpected difficulties, unforeseen causes, calamitous happenings which may prove to be ruinous - which may and can even change the course of a person's life. It is a 'pointer', which must attract the interest and attention of the students of Astrology - since in case of about 50% people, the Dasha-period of the 8th house-sign runs during a very vulnerable age-period - which may be termed as a period of 'transition', and the natives are apt to fall prey to temptations and "slip off the track"; consequently their course of life may even be entirely changed.

For 'male' people, if the 7th is the "stronger" sign (between the Ascendant and the 7th from it), then :

    (i) If the Ascendant is a Chara (movable) sign, then the Trikuta Dasha of the 8th house-sign will run for 8 years : from 15th year to 22nd year.

(ii) If the Ascendant is a Sthira (fixed) sign, then the Trikuta Dasha of the 8th house-sign will run for 9 years : from 17th year to 25th year.

(iii) If the Ascendant is a Ubhaya (movable) sign, then the Trikuta Dasha of the 8th house-sign will run for 7 years : from 19th year to 25th year.

(iv) If the Ascendant is a Chara (movable) sign, then the Mandooka Dasha of the 8th house-sign will run for 8 years : from 25th year to 32nd year.

    (v) If the Ascendant is a Sthira (fixed) sign, then the Mandooka Dasha of the 8th house-sign will run for 9 years : from 25th year to 33rd year.

(vi) If the Ascendant is a Ubhaya (movable) sign, then the Mandooka Dasha of the 8th house-sign will run for 7 years : from 25th year to 31st year.

For 'female' people, if the Ascendant is the "stronger" sign (between the Ascendant and the 7th from it), then :

    (i) If the Ascendant is a Chara (movable) sign, then the Mandooka Dasha of the 8th house-sign will run for 8 years : from 34th year to 41st year.

(ii) If the Ascendant is a Sthira (fixed) sign, then the Mandooka Dasha of the 8th house-sign will run for 9 years : from 32nd year to 40th year.

(iii) If the Ascendant is a Ubhaya (movable) sign, then the Mandooka Dasha of the 8th house-sign will run for 7 years : from 33rd year to 39th year.

As per traditional Astrological principles, the 8th-house is considered to be the house of marrital well-being (mangalya) in case of female natives. The age-period beginning from 32 or 33 or 34 and extending up to 39 or 40 or 41 is quite naturally a very important time-period in the married life. ... Now, if we want to ascertain what is there in store of the individual female native, we should judge the condition of the 8th house, and Jaimini Mandooka Dasha can be very advantageously used for finding the possible happenings during the period.

As per traditional Astrological principles, the 8th-house is considered to be the house of accidental mishaps, untoward happenings, debacles in profession, etc - more so in case of male natives. The age-period beginning from 32 or 33 or 34 and extending up to 39 or 40 or 41 is quite naturally a very important time-period in the person's career. ... Now, if we want to ascertain what is there in store of the individual male native, we should judge the condition of the 8th house, and Jaimini Mandooka Dasha can be very advantageously used for finding the possible happenings during the period.

As a rule, if the 8th-house is under 'Subha-Kartari Yoga', or if the 8th-house is occupied by the 8th-lord itself (or jaspected by it), or if an exalted planet is situated in it (or jaspects it), or if natural benefic planet/s is/ are situated in it (or jaspects it), or if the 8th-lord is situated either in it's exaltation sign or in own sign, then during this period of the 8th house-sign, only very favorable results can reasonably be looked forward to.

Similarly, if the 8th-house is under 'Papa-Kartari Yoga', or if a debilitated planet is situated in it the 8th-house (or jaspected by it), or if natural malefic planet/s - which are neither exalted nor situated in in own sign or own star - is/ are situated in it (or jaspects it), or if the 8th-lord is situated either in it's debilitation sign, then during this period of the 8th house-sign, then unfavorable results of serious sort are very much likely to happen.

When the influences are found to be of benefic planets and malefic planets both, then it goes without saying that only mixed influences will prevail. For ascertaining the precise nature of events, we also have to judge the Bhukti signs, and the inter-relationship between the similar house-lords - as reckoned from the Dasha-sign (DS), the Bhukti-sign (BS), and the Ascendant.

If the 8th-lord and the 11th-lords are involved in "sign-exchange", and no modifying influences are present in the chart, then it can bring in grave dangers; the native can face serious problems from criminals, and/ or troubles from police. If one of the two planets is Mars, while the other planet is also a natural malefic, then it can be construed as a very confirmatory indication.

If the 11th-lord in the 8th, or if the 8th-lord is in 11th (that is, it is not sign-exchange, but is an one way shifting only), then also the person may run the risk of becoming a victim of the wrath of the authorities/ superiors, and may have to face many difficulties from various other sources.

If out of the three dire malefic planets - Mars, Rahu, and Saturn - if two or more planets influence the 8th house-sign by being situated in or jaspecting it, and if these influencing planets are neither situated in exaltation sign or in own sign or in own star, and there are no modifying influences are not present in the chart, then serious difficulties may arise, and happiness in married life can be very badly affected. The intensity of the problems will be further heightened if the influencing planets are found to be retrograde.

Jaimini Mandooka Dasha is applicable to a Divisional chart - the Ekadashamsha (D-11). As the chart is alternately called Rudramsha, for the purpose of differentiation, the new Mandooka Dasha set-up might be termed as "Rudra-Mandooka Dasha". By following the same set of principles, traditional Astrological logic and reasoning, this Dasha can be efficiently utilized for finding the nature of- and timing of- possible outcome in case of contests (like elections), law-suits, confiscations by punitive authorities, criminal or departmental proceedings, etc. In it, reference is to be made to the divisional chart (D-11) - and not to the Lagna Kundali. In this also, the unit of timing of event will be Antara - which lasts for 1 month only.

    (3). Karaka Dasha class :

Atma-Karaka Dasha and Upa-Karaka Graha Dasha belong to this class.

These two Dasha systems are useful chiefly for finding the "prospects in the sphere of profession" for the persons who are actively engaged in profession, or are desirous to do so. (These Dasha systems will thus have hardly any use for the people like general housewives and other females - who are neither actively engaged in any profession, nor are at all desirous to do so). It is to be noted that the Atma-Karaka Dasha is the "main", the Upa-Karaka Graha Dasha is "auxiliary" to it. For timing of events, the Atma-Karaka Dasha is therefore more dependable. Upa-Karaka Graha Dasha periods indicate circumstantial advantages or lack of it. When the same/ similar indications and the same/ similar timings are obtained from both the Dasha systems, then the indications become very confirmatory.

These two Dasha systems are combined periods of Signs and Planets - where both are of equal importance. If in a sign, there are two or more planets, then the same sign will appear as many times as there are planets in it - but every time the "co-significator" Planet will be different. If there are no planets in a sign, then it will not appear in the Dasha set-up. Since in total there are 9 planets (Sun to Ketu), there will be 9 Dasha-periods in total in the set-up.

Atma-Karaka Dasha commences from the sign occupied by the "Atma-Karaka"* planet in the chart. For finding the Atma-Karaka, "Ashta-Karaka" method (Sun to Rahu*) is to be followed. And, for comparing the Krishamshas of planets, Rahu's Krishamsha is to be taken as to be equal to it's sign-complement (that is, x = 30* - Krishamsha of Rahu). ... But the same process will not apply to any of the 'tara-grahas' (planets Mars to Saturn) - even if the planet is found to be 'retrograde'.

Upa-Karaka Graha Dasha commences from the sign occupied by the "Upa-Karaka Graha"* planet in the chart. Although originally the term used in Jaimini Astrology is 'UpaGraha', since it is in fact neither a Sun-based UpaGraha (like Dhuma) nor a Weekday-based UpaGraha (like Gulika) - rather this is actually a planet (Sun to Saturn) - using the term "Upa-Karaka Graha" is better and more meaningful.

In the two hemispheres in the chart (from the Ascendant point to Descenant point, and from the Descendant point to Ascendant), first it is found which planet has traversed most ahead in terms of signs. If two or more planets are found (in the same hemisphere or different hemisphere), then the planet who has traversed most in terms of Krishamsha becomes the "Upa-Karaka Graha".

    The Succession of Dashas :

In both the systems vary depending on the 'gender' of the native. For male people, it is in the order of Kendra-Panaphara-Apoklima, while in case of female people, it is in the order of Kendra-Apoklima-Panaphara.

    (i) In case of male people, the succession is in "zodiacal" order. ... Thus it is Kendra (1-4-7-10), followed by Panaphara (2-5-8-11), then followed by Apoklima (3-6-9-12) houses - beginning from their respective Commencing Sign.

(ii) In case of female people, the succession is in "reversed" order. ... Thus it is Kendra (1-10-7-4), followed by Apoklima (12-9-6-3), then followed by Panaphara (11-8-5-2) houses - beginning from their respective Commencing Sign.

    The Duration of Dashas :

The position of the individual planets are counted severally from (i) the Ascendant, and (ii) the 7th house-sign. Out of the two counts, whichever count is found to be higher is taken as to be the Dasha-duration - in terms of years.

Thus, if a planet is situated either situated in the Ascendant or in the 7th house-sign, then it's Dasha-duration will be 7 years (as that is the higher count between the two counts - from the Ascendant, and from the 7th house-sign); this is the minimum possible duration. ... Similarly, if it is situated either situated in the 12th house-sign, or in the 6th house-sign, then it's Dasha-duration will be 12 years (as that is the higher count between the two counts - from the Ascendant, and from the 7th house-sign); this is the maximum possible duration. ... For any other position, the higher count will be anything between 8 and 11, and that respective figure in years will be the corresponding duration for the Dasha-period of that Sign & Planet combination.

[ N.B. : A difference is to be noted and remembered that in case of Chara Dasha class (Jaimini Chara Dasha and Trikona Dasha), the variable duration of the Dashas = (SignCount - 1) in years; whereas in case of Karaka Dasha class (Atma-Karaka Dasha and Upa-Karaka Graha Dasha), the variable duration of the Dashas = SignCount in years. ]

    Certain Special Cases :

If the same planet becomes the Atma-Karaka Graha and the Upa-Karaka Graha as well (which can happen in 1 in 7 cases, i.e., about 14% cases), or if the Atma-Karaka Graha happens to be Rahu while it is situated together with the Upa-Karaka Graha planet in the same sign (which can happen in 1 in 96 cases, i.e., about 1% cases), then these two Dasha set-ups will become identical. But in most cases, these two will become different.

(1). When these two Dasha set-ups become different (as it happens in most cases), if the change of Dashas occur simultaneously in both the set-ups, and if the age-period is relevant for having onset of-, or change of-, profession, then that particular juncture period becomes a "landmark" in the person's career history , and an important and significant 'change' takes place. The actual timing of such a happening can further be refined by taking the year on 'savana' basis (that is, @ 360 days/ year).

    Thus, if in a male person's chart (D.O.B. 13/ 06/ 1954), such a simultaneous change occurs at the age of 21 years, then the actual event-marking will be around the age of around [ 21 * ( 360/ 365.256363 ) = ] or around 20 y. 8 m. 11 d. By adding this age-period to D.O.B., we obtain a period around Date : 24/ 02/ 1975*** .

The actual event : Joining in first Service was on : 01/ 03/ 1975***.

(2). Another interesting thing is to be noted that when these two Dasha set-ups become different (as it happens in most cases), if the the Dasha of the same Sign and the same co-ruler Planet operates concurrently for a few years as per both the two systems, then the duration which is common to both the set-ups bring in some significant changes, and the native becomes very active and busy . The overall results to be experienced will of course depend on various relevant factors - the disposition of the Sign, the disposition of the Planet, planet/s situated in the sign (if any), and the planet/s jaspecting the sign (if any).

Thus, if in a male person's chart, as per Atma-Karaka Dasha, Sagittarius (Mars) runs for 11 years : from 44th to 54th year , while as per Upa-Karaka Graha Dasha, the same Sagittarius (Mars) runs for 11 years : from 41st to 51st year , then the part of the period in common to both will be : from 44th to 51st year. ... During this period, the person will have some significant changes, and he will remain very active and busy.

    More Important Dasha/ Bhukti/ Antara periods :

In these two Dasha systems, the Dasha/ Bhukti/ Antara periods of signs occupied by the 10th-lord, the 5th-lord, and the "Amatya-Karaka" planets produce favorable results. The periods of signs jaspected by any of these planets also give favorable results. Similar results are expected during the periods of signs whose lords are situated in the 10th or 5th from it, and also when such lords as considered from the Dasha-sign (DS), the Bhukti-sign (BS) and the Ascendant form harmonious inter-relationships.

Understandably, if modifying influences are not present in the chart, then the Dasha/ Bhukti/ Antara periods of sign occupied by the 8th-lord may and can produce quite unfavorable results. The periods of signs jaspected this planets also gives similar results. Similar results are expected during the periods of signs whose lord is situated in the 8th from it, or the 8th-lord from the sign is situated in it.

If modifying influences are not present in the chart, then the periods of the sign whose lord is "retrograde" situated in the 10th or 5th from it may and can produce adverse results. ... This will be more so if the planet is Saturn, is in the 10th from the sign, and is "retrograde". Similar results are experienced during the periods of the sign if the 10th-lord or the 5th-lord - as reckoned from the sign - is "retrograde", while it is situated in the sign.

If two or more "retrograde" malefic planets - one of them being a Moon's node (Rahu or Ketu), and the other is a planet (Mars or Saturn or Sun) - are influencing a sign by their situation or jaspect, while no modifying influences are found to be present in the chart, then unfavorable results are expected during the periods of that particular sign.

  • Timing of Events" by using Various 'Jaimini Rashi Dashas'

GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO JAIMINI "RASHI-DASHAS" :

Unlike traditional Parashari system, the reckoning in Jaimini system is sometimes in usual "zodiacal" order, while at some other times it is in "reversed" order. It is perhaps this characteristic nicety of the system - which makes some of the learners pretty nervous, or confused, or even afraid. But if a person is really endowed with an alert mind, sharp intelligence, retentive memory, and capacity to concentrate, then with some years' of profound studies and practical experience, he/ she can develop a fairly good insight, and look forward to becoming fully capable of handling the horoscopes quite easily. But it deserves mentioning here that one must not expect to master the subject in double-quick fashion and vini-vidi-vici style; if anybody tries to do so, then he/ she should rather remember the well-known and meaningful word - which Napoleon had struck out from his dictionary.

There are as many as 42 Dasha-systems in Jaimini Astrology. A good many of them are not only workable, but also can be confidently depended upon for arriving at the timings of all major and important events of life. These Dasha-systems are neither 'conditional' nor horoscope-specific - that is, these can be very easily and highly advantageously used for any horoscope with a great degree of confidence, and perfectly satisfying results could be obtained quite easily.

Excepting the Dashas of the "Karaka Dasha" class - wherein the Dashas are of Signs and Planets both, in most of the Jaimini Dasha-systems, the Dashas (and obviously the Bhuktis and the Antaras) are of Signs (and not of Planets) . These Dasha-systems basically differ from the more popularly used traditional Parashari* Dasha-systems (of course, except in case of K.C.D.* or Kala-Chakra Dasha) - as therein the Dashas are of Planets (and not of Signs).

[ *N.B. : Detailed information about Kala-Chakra Dasha have been provided under appropriate heading. ]

Jaimini Rashi-Dashas are not dependent on the Longitude of Moon :

Another important difference with the Parashari Dashas is that, in case of Jaimini Rashi-Dashas, the reckoning is not dependent on the Longitude of Moon, and there is no "Balance of Dasha at Birth". The reckoning is rather directly or indirectly dependent on the "Ascendant" instead . The durations of the Dashas are "fixed" in some cases (as in Sthira Dasha/ Brahma-Graha Dasha, Mandooka Dasha/ Trikuta Dasha), whereas somewhere else (as in Chara Dasha/ Trikona Dasha, Atma-Karaka Dasha/ Upa-Karaka Graha Dasha), the durations are "variable". But in both the cases of these two classes, the durations of the Dashas are always in terms of a certain number of *'full' years (*however, there is a single exception: in case of Yogardha Dasha, the duration may include 'half' year also).

The Duration of Dashas, Bhuktis & Antaras in Jaimini Rashi Dashas :

The durations of Jaimini Chara Dasha and Jaimini Trikona Dasha can range from 1 year (minimum) to 12 years (maximum); the durations of Jaimini Sthira Dasha and Jaimini Brahma Graha Dasha can range from 7 year (minimum) to 9 years (maximum); the durations of Jaimini Mandooka Dasha and Jaimini Trikuta Dasha also can range from 7 year (minimum) to 9 years (maximum); the durations of Jaimini Atma-Karaka Dasha and Jaimini Upa-Karaka Graha Dasha can range from 7 year (minimum) to 12 years (maximum).

For "Timing of Events" by using the Jaimini Rashi-Dashas, the very best of results can only be obtained when - regardless of the Dasha-duration - the Bhukti-durations are taken as to be of 1 year each . As such, when the Dasha-duration is of 12 years - which can happen in rare cases in some Jaimini Dashas like Chara Dasha, Trikona Dasha, etc; but it can never happen in case of Sthira Dasha, Brahma Graha Dasha, Mandooka Dasha, Trikuta Dasha, etc - all the signs will not have their Bhuktis in a particular Dasha. The numerical figure of Dasha-duration (in years) will indicate the number of Bhuktis.

The Antara-durations are always of 1 month each - in any Bhukti in any Dasha. As such, all the signs will surely have their Antaras in any Bhukti in any Jaimini Rashi-Dasha

    The Sequence of Rashi-Bhuktis :

The sequence of Bhuktis in any Rashi-Dasha is found in the same manner. It always commences from the sign in which the lord of the Dasha-sign is placed ; then :

    (i) If the lord of the Dasha-sign is situated in an "odd" sign, then the succession of Bhuktis are in "zodiacal" order - beginning from the commencing sign. But,

(ii) If the lord of the Dasha-sign is situated in an "even" sign, then the succession of Bhuktis are in "reversed" order - beginning from the commencing sign.

    The Sequence of Rashi-Antaras :

The sequence of Antaras in any Rashi-Bhukti is also found in the same manner. It always commences from the sign in which the lord of the Bhukti-sign is placed ; then :

    (i) If the lord of the Bhukti-sign is situated in an "odd" sign, then the succession of Antaras are in "zodiacal" order - beginning from the commencing sign. But,

(ii) If the lord of the Bhukti-sign is situated in an "even" sign, then the succession of Antaras are in "reversed" order - beginning from the commencing sign.

Reckoning of Aspects as per Jaimini principles :

While finding "Timing of Events" by using any Jaimini Rashi Dasha, the "Aspects" are always of Signs (and not of Planets). As the "Aspects" as used in Jaimini Astrology are different from the "Aspects" as used in traditional Parashari Astrology , for avoiding possible confusion and maintaining distinction, I have coined the term "Jaspects" for denoting Jaimini Aspects. ... Jaimini Aspects are different from the Tajaka Aspects also (which is used in Varshaphala and also in Prashna); for the latter, owing to the very same reason, I have coined the term "Taspects".

The Jaimini Aspects are of two kinds : (i) Frontal, and (ii) Lateral. Although this does not always make much of difference during delineation of results, this is to be borne in mind that the "frontal" jaspects are relatively stronger in influence - in comparison to the 'lateral' ones.

Importance of the "Argalas" (if present) :

The "Argalas" (Mukhya, Gouna, and Vishesha) and 'Virodha-Argalas' are of special importance for delineation of results in Jaimini Astrology.

    Importance of the "Karakas" :

The "Karakas" (in most cases, as per "Sapta-Karaka" system) are also considered important. The sign in which the Atma-Karaka is placed is considered to have gained some 'additional' strength for it. Among the other Karakas, the most important is "Amatya-Karaka" - which is considered for Profession (Service/ Business); 'Dara-Karaka' is considered for Marriage, and so on.

    Importance of the "Padas" :

The "Padas" (or Arudhas) of Houses (which correspond to as many signs away from the Ascendant, as they are from the Ascendant) also of considerable influence in Jaimini Astrology. ... Incidentally, I wish to mention it here that the "Houses" in Jaimini Astrology corresponds the respective 'Signs' - beginning from the Ascendant-sign.

Noting the combined influence of Jupiter & Mercury (if there) :

If in a particular chart, any sign is found under the joint influence of Jupiter and Mercury - that is, both are conjoined in the sign, or one of them is situated in the sign - while the other jaspects it, or both of these two planets are jaspecting it, then also the strength of the sign becomes enhanced for providing favorable results in general. It will be more so if at least one of the planets become the lord of a concerned house, while the other planet becomes the particular "Karaka" (as per Sapta-Karaka) having the same/ similar indications.

Looking for the presence of Kartari Yogas (if any) :

For presence of Kartari Yoga, one or more planet/s should be situated in both the 2nd and the 12th - as reckoned from the sign. If one or more natural benefic planet/s is/ are situated in both the places as reckoned from the sign - while no natural malefic planet is situated in either of these two places, then the sign is under "Subha Kartari Yoga". It is indicative of favorable results and auspicious happenings - during the period of the sign, which is under such influence.

But if one or more natural malefic planet/s is/ are situated in both the places as reckoned from the sign - while no natural benefic planet is situated in either of these two places, then the sign is under "Papa Kartari Yoga". It is indicative of unfavorable results and inauspicious happenings - during the period of the sign, which is under such influence.

The 4th and the 8th positions from a sign are 'crucial' places :

The 4th and the 8th positions from a sign are crucial places, and if planets of 'similar' nature are situated in such places - as reckoned from the sign - exerts their characteristic influences on the sign, which manifests during the period of such sign. The influences are somewhat similar to the respective Kartari Yoga (as mentioned above).

Thus if one or more natural benefic planet/s are situated in both the places as reckoned from the sign - while no natural malefic planet is situated in either of these two places, then it is indicative of favorable results and auspicious happenings - during the period of the sign, which is under such influence.

But if one or more natural malefic planet/s are situated in both the places as reckoned from the sign - while no natural benefic planet is situated in either of these two places, then it is indicative of unfavorable results and inauspicious happenings - during the period of the sign, which is under such influence.

Looking for the presence of "Repeat Patterns" :

In any chart, the Ascendant-lord is situated in some sign - which corresponds to certain house as per the sign-count in usual "zodiacal" order. If from any sign (other than the Ascendant), the same combination is found, then the "pattern" of the horoscope may be considered to have been "repeated". During the period of the sign (Dasha/ Bhukti/ Antara), the significations of that particular house - as denoted by the sign-count - is likely to gain some prominence. An illustration would make the learner's comprehension clearer :

Suppose, the Ascendant is Leo, the Sun is in Taurus, Venus is in sign Cancer, Saturn is in sign Libra, etc. ... Now, up to this part of the chart is relevant for our discussion here. In this horoscope, we see that the Ascendant-lord (Sun) is situated in the 10th from it. As such, it may be said to be the "pattern" of this horoscope. ... We find that the same pattern is "repeated" in case of sign Libra (as the sign-lord Venus is situated in the 10th from it), and also in case of sign Capricorn (as the sign-lord Saturn is situated in the 10th from it). ... So, during the Dasha/ Bhukti/ Antara of signs Libra and/ or Capricorn, we should check for the presence of harmonious 'inter-relationship' among the 10th-lords (as reckoned from the relevant signs - DS, BS, AS, and the Ascendant). It should however be borne in mind that just by glancing at the "repeat pattern", the viewer must not jump up, and arrive at a premature conclusion that during the periods of such signs, some happening pertaining to the 10th house is sure to happen; actually, it may not happen at all in case if the essential requisite - the inter-relationship - is not found to be present.

In the event of virtual absence of the most vital requisite - the harmonious 'inter-relationship' among the lords of the signification house (as reckoned from DS, BS, AS, and Ascendant) - although the indications can not be construed as to be 'confirmatory', still the presence of the "repeat pattern" may be considered to be an useful 'pointer' , which attracts the attention of the viewer in a particular direction - that can be obtained from the horoscope simply at a glance.

Importance of some Divisional charts & different methods of reckoning for 'female' natives :

The combinations of "Yogas" (or planetary combinations) are considerably different in Jaimini Astrology. For delineation of results, only the Yogas as per Jaimini principles are utilized. (The learners should not over-enthusiastically try in vain to mix up the commonly found and easily remembered Parashari Yogas like Budhaditya, Gaja-Keshari, Pancha Maha-Purusha, etc with Jaimini system). ... Some divisional charts are used in Jaimini Astrology for this purpose. Of them, the most important are : (i) Drekkana chart, and (ii) Navamsha chart. It should be noted that the method of reckoning of these divisional charts vary depending on the 'gender' of the native; the methods of reckoning may remain the same for 'male' persons; but these surely become different for "female" persons :

If the native is "female", then :

    (i) Somanath's method is to be followed for reckoning of 'Drekkana' . (Whereas, for 'male' people, the traditional method itself is used).

(ii) Krishna Mishra's method is to be followed for reckoning of 'Navamsha' . (Whereas, for 'male' people, the traditional method itself is used).

Some additional divisional charts also find useful utilization in Jaimini Astrology - which are normally not used in traditional Parashari Shodash Varga System (Consisting of the main Lagna-Kundali and 15 different divisional charts). These are Ekadashamsha or Rudramsha (D-11), Panchamsha (D-5), Shashtamsha (D-6), Ashtamamsha (D-8), etc.

Certain Rashi-Dashas are applicable only to certain Divisional Charts :

It is of interest to note that certain Jaimini Rashi-Dasha Systems are applicable to certain Divisional Charts. Thus, Mandooka Dasha is applicable to Ekadashamsha or Rudramsha (D-11) charts; for maintaining distinction, it is referred to as Rudra-Mandooka Dasha . In this Dasha, a planet gains specialty by virtue of becoming the 'Hara' - which has usefulness for delineation of results in Mandooka Dasha (which is preferred for female persons) and also in Trikuta Dasha (which is preferred for male persons).

Jaimini Chara Dasha - as per the method of Raghava Bhatta & Nrisimha Suri - is applicable to Navamsha charts - which is drawn as per Krishna Mishra's method in case of 'female' natives (and in traditional ways for male natives). This new form of Dasha is termed as PadaNathAmsha Dasha , with the only difference that the durations are taken in terms of 'Nakshatra' years @ 324 days/ year).

Approximately, at the periods around which one PNA Rashi-Dasha ends and another one starts, some distinct change of influences are observed. The PNA Rashi-Dasha in Navamsha charts, and the Jaimini Chara Dasha (as per RB-NS method) in "Nadi-Amsha"* charts can be depended upon for finding some auspicious events like Foreign Journey/ Travel (among various other interesting events of life).

Jaimini Chara Dasha is perfectly applicable to "Nadi-Amsha"* charts also :

The Nadis are very minute divisions of signs; these are 150 in number, and are of unequal span . A typical chart termed as Nadi-Amsha chart can be formed by considering the constitutional nature of the signs (chara, sthira or ubhaya) and the corresponding Nadi-number for the respective positions of the planets (Sun to Ketu) and the Ascendant. In this chart, Rahu and Ketu will always remain in the same sign, and the disposition of this particular sign gains importance (of course, among various others) for delineation of results.

If the Time of Birth is known very correctly, and due checking is done for ascertaining whether very slight adjustment is needed for it's "rectification" or not, then these "Nadi-Amsha" charts (which have no resemblance to the Lagna-Kundali or any divisional chart) can be effectively used for delineation of the nature of results (and also for finding the "Timing of Events" with accuracy and precision). ... The "Antaras" of 1 month's duration (which can be quite easily found by following the same set of principles - as is normally followed in case of judging from Lagna-Kundali) will be the unit for timing of events; and the timings for a series of events can easily be found one after another with precision and accuracy.

  • "Timing of Events" by using Various 'Jaimini Rashi Dashas'
